Getting Ministry Traction Instead of Just Spinning Your Wheels

by Ed Stetzer and Mike Dodson

“We’re just spinning our wheels” - that’s the way many church leaders and churches describe where they are. The church engine is revving, the wheels are turning, the smoke is flying, but the church really isn’t getting anywhere. Often, there are lots of programs and good activities, but many churches aren’t getting much traction when it comes to impacting the unchurched culture and making disciples who make disciples.

Here are three simple principles to follow that should help you get some ministry traction and stop spinning your wheels:

1. Remember that church revitalization is a spiritual endeavor. It’s not about the latest programs, methods, models or techniques. Remember what Paul said, “So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow” (1 Corinthians 3:6, NIV).

This principle was confirmed in a huge way in our study of Comeback Churches. According to Comeback leaders, the key to making a comeback was this - “renewed belief in Jesus Christ and the mission of the church.” That was the highest-rated single item in the study. How simple and basic is that!?

But are we really, truly focused on Jesus and his mission for us? Or do we allow many other things, even many good things, to get in the way of a pure and sincere devotion to Jesus and his mission for us-sending us out into this world as his disciples, his missionaries, his witnesses?

Multiple things can get in the way of churches being able to maintain and develop real spiritual vitality and passionately pursue Christ’s mission:

  • Self-focused leadership and churches
  • Being under God’s hand of discipline
  • Lack of exercising a radical faith and reliance upon God
  • Doing instead of being the church
  • Watering down or not proclaiming the Gospel
  • Distracted from being in love with Jesus first
  • Ineffective disciple-making
  • Irrelevant ministry
  • Pride in our way of doing things

Take some time and reflect on these things regarding your ministry context. Ask God if any of those things are true in your life or the life of your church. Remember that God has made a simple way for us to get things right. Take note of some of the key things that Jesus called his churches to be and do in Revelation 2-3:

  • Remember and repent (2:4-5)-remember what it was like to be really in love with Jesus and go back to that place with God’s help.
  • Be faithful (2:10)-don’t get discouraged; don’t quit; trust in the one who can see you through the ups and downs of life and ministry and defeat your enemies.
  • Repent (2:16)-stop teaching or stop those who are teaching false doctrine; stop compromising on clear issues of immorality.
  • Hold on to what you have (2:25, 3:11)-biblical teaching, life change, good deeds, real life, and genuine faith.
  • Wake up (3:2-3)-engage the living God; engage the changing culture with the unchanging truth.
  • Be earnest and repent (3:19-20)-live with true purity; acknowledge your spiritual poverty; look at things the way God sees them.

2. Simplify. Simplify. Simplify. One of the biggest keys that stood out in the study of Comeback churches was intentional and strategic action. Comeback leaders didn’t waste motion and energy. They didn’t try to do it all. They did key things like pray strategically, conduct intentional outreach events, and involve as many people as possible in ministry.

In the coming year, how could you simplify your ministry process and focus on Jesus and his mission for your church? How could you practice simple obedience to the commands of Jesus to make disciples, baptize them, and then, teach them to observe his commands?

That raises one specific issue to evaluate in your ministry context: Are people being taught truth or taught to observe that truth? Simply making an adjustment regarding that one issue could transform your ministry, but it won’t be easy. The best resource to help you simplify is Simple Church by Thom Rainer and Eric Geiger.

3. Changes will be necessary, but making changes won’t necessarily be easy. Some have said that doing the same things the same way and expecting different results is . . . well, the definition of insanity. Change could mean that there are things we need to stop doing; change could mean that there are things we need to start doing; change could mean doing what we are doing differently; change could mean that I’m stuck and my life needs to be transformed in a fresh way by the power of the Gospel.

Did you realize that the power to change comes from placing faith in the Gospel? That’s right. The good news of the Gospel is not just about God’s power to get people out of hell and into heaven. In Romans Paul stated, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, ‘But the righteous man shall live by faith’” (Romans 1:16-17, NASB).

As you trust God to make changes, keep these things in mind:

  • People respond to change differently - a few people will be ready to change quickly; a few more will get on board as you begin to make changes; some will wait and see what happens as changes are made; some will go along; and a few will probably never be favorable toward change.
  • Create a climate where change is welcomed and anticipated - develop trust with the people you serve, model the changes you desire to make; understand the church’s history; work with key influencers among the people; and earn the right to make changes.
  • Take your time leading established churches to make changes - don’t be in a hurry; help people see the reality of the situation; focus on making renewed disciples in Jesus Christ.

It’s easy to get to a place in ministry when it feels like the church is just running in place, spinning its wheels, and going nowhere fast. But things don’t have to stay that way. God desires to renew and revitalize his people and help them start moving forward again. Get some traction in your ministry. Don’t settle for just smoking the tires - let God rekindle a spiritual fire in your life and ministry.

Dear brothers, you are so right on this matter, I'm the Pastor of a Hispanic congregation in Ca, we had some major transitions before, one of them was me becoming the senior pastor after the other pastor had to come back to his country. Many people had a hard time with the change, some left but the ones that stayed have being supportive. The Lord is taking us in yet new horizons, and new changes are due on the way we do ministry...2 weeks ago I grabbed the local phone book and starting calling churches, big and small so I could get an idea where our city congregations are as far as reaching the lodt. I started asking for them to share with me about the activities, and is pretty sad to say that most of them have nothing but inward kind of activities, everything is focused on the well being of the church but nothing geared to reach those thousands of people that are dying withuot Christ. The Lord then told me:I need you to do things differently, this. This year I'm planning to remove things that we do that are good, but are taking precious time to evangelize,my wife and I are planning to go out 2 nights a week with some couples of my core group and do intentional outreach in our community. My prayers are with all those pastors that are hearing the Voice of God about being stucked just like we are, brothers let's do what God called us to do sheppard the flock but most importantly to make disciples, to equip them and to send them out to win the lost!

3. Bill Scott says...

Some wonderful observations. Pertaining to the number 1 finding that church transformation is a spiritual endeavor sums up the entire matter rather well. William P's comment about sin is certainly indicative of the churches problem, and has always been. The attitude that the Church at large has taken toward sin seems to be one of tolerance. The proclamation of the Gospel has always been unwelcome by the world. It is indeed tragic when men of God proclaim the unsearchable riches of God's Word and are put out of the flocks to which God had called them. Churches that are experiencing genuine spiritual transformations are those that embrace the glorious Truth of God's Word, Person, and seek to walk in holiness. Indeed we are not fighting flesh and blood, but are fighting against principalites and powers that have always and will continue to blind the eyes of fallen humanity. Pastor's have one of the greatest opportunities to impact the body of Christ with the principles of God by the proclamation of His Word. When all is said and done may we be found faithful to that Great Shepherd, despite our disappointments, setbacks and hindrances. I have just purchased "Comeback Churches" and look forward to gleaning nuggets of truth from it.

2. Warren Lamb says...

Well, Brother William, you have pretty well summarized things, I do believe. Thanks, SC, for the article - it fits oh, so well in where we are as a fellowship rightnow. We are in a state of major transition. Many people, as has been said, do not handle change well. Many are moving on to a local "Pac-Man" church (a church that is growing by gobbling up a bunch of smaller churches) because we ar4e focused on being disciples. We recently complete Bill Hulls "Choosing the Life" curriculum(check out either choosingthelife.org, or bible.org/sf if you want to know more). Some had a major paradigm shift - others are not interested at all. Communities of grace and relationships of trust are what discipleship communities are about, but even more, they are about believing, living, loving, ministering and leading like Jesus did. The quote I love is this: "We are to follow Jesus so closely that the dust from His sandals covers our clothing." Be blessed!

1. William Pawlyshyn says...

just a couple of comments... 1. Self-focused leadership and churches - when looking inward, is all we see "how good we are" and being better than the "first church of fourth street!". why are we not reaching outward (and bring them into our homes) to reach all types of individuals but instead just those who smell nice and are the same colour as "we" 2. Second and probably the most difficult - Being under God’s hand of discipline. I have heard of elder boards who have fired pastors for preaching the Truth of the Word because the Word 'ruffeled their feathers'. If the psator was brought into the flock to be the shepherd, do they ever consider that the 'church' doctrine' written by man could possibly if ever superceeded by GOD's WORD??? Remember David wrote; 'thy rod and thy staff...' we need to refresh ourselves as to the functon of those instruments. And what about the shepherd would even broke the leg of a wandering sheep - - in todays society a pastor would go to jail for such a task of discipline 3. Lack of exercising a radical faith and reliance upon God - we have become a microwave society and a feel good society, as well as a society which follow 'god' small letter on purpose. when was the last time a big church ventured on prayer instead of selling bonds to build? 4. Doing instead of being the church - actions speaks louder that words?. Paul said we are to be a living sacrifice. God said he would put in us a heart of flesh. We are to be living and breathing and providing the truth - - not just for show with 20 - 60,000 members and enough money to be on twenty different TV stations, but to serve those who knock on our door in the middle of the night and go bring them a loaf of bread and offer shelter. 5. Watering down or not proclaiming the Gospel - the other day I heard of a word I haven't heard on TV for a while....."SIN"......have we gotten to a point where we only need to smell like a christian (whatever that really means today!) I remember many years ago a story in what was then communist Russia. A couple of soliders cam into a church service and fired off machine guns, telling anyone who wanted to leave because of their christian faith could - about 1/2 left. After that the soliders said that this action really gave them insight into who were the true believers wiling to die for their faith, not just christians because of grampa and grandma. What would happen in your church if that happened?? 6. Distracted from being in love with Jesus first ..... TV, sports, family...where I minister, if there is a football game scheduled or baseball forget about getting individuals to hear the WORD! Their god is sport and let us see of the NFL, NBA or NL will save them! 7. Ineffective disciple-making...How many times has there been individuals who are interested in learning about the Lord, and pastors or elders who are not even grounded in the word themselves attempt to train (blind leading the blind). Boenhoffer laboured in his book to tell us about effective discipleship..... come to think about it, we really should not be suprised about being a failure at this for as we read Jesus' return his men who spent over three years with Him didn't get at first... 8. Irrelevant ministry - I believe we are in such competition with those around us we forget about community and the effectiveness of individual church bodies and their specific place. A few weeks ago I brought up a point in my sermon where I referred to those called church hoppers - appropriate here as well..my reference was Paul and his writings in Corinth (1 Cor 12:27) we are parts of the Body of Christ and maybe the reason your ministry is ineffective is because your are an eyelash on the toe nail! For the hoppers, maybe they really don't belong as a knww when they are called as an ear! 9. Pride in our way of doing things. the critical word is "OUR." People write books with their smiling face plastered all over the front cover, and are attempting to call people to be humnble before GOD! - am I the only one seeing an irony in this action? Do we forget the writings in Matthew Chapter 5... I realize we all want to leave a legacy for those who are to follow us, but let us consider tie day and time....there is not much left of either and getting the GOSPEL out and as an old 60's song said "forget about ourselves and concentrate on Him and worship Him" about sums it all up. Let us consult the Holy Spirit and serioulsy re-read and ACT ON the writer of the OT book 2 Chronicles 7:14. Quite possible all the above writings would be an endeavor not needing another book to tell us what to do....."If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. let us be on our knees and spot worring that floor is too 'hard'.
