This is what the Lord says: 5 "What fault did your fathers find in me, 5 that they strayed so far from me? 5 They followed worthless idols 5 and became worthless themselves.
They did not ask, 'Where is the Lord, 6 who brought us up out of Egypt 6 and led us through the barren wilderness, 6 through a land of deserts and rifts, 6 a land of drought and darkness,[a] 6 a land where no one travels and no one lives?'
I brought you into a fertile land 7 to eat its fruit and rich produce. 7 But you came and defiled my land 7 and made my inheritance detestable.
The priests did not ask, 8 'Where is the Lord?' 8 Those who deal with the law did not know me; 8 the leaders rebelled against me. 8 The prophets prophesied by Baal, 8 following worthless idols.
"Therefore I bring charges against you again," 9 declares the Lord. 9 "And I will bring charges against your children's children.
Cross over to the coasts of Kittim[b] and look, 10 send to Kedar[c] and observe closely; 10 see if there has ever been anything like this:
Has a nation ever changed its gods? 11 (Yet they are not gods at all.) 11 But my people have exchanged their[d] Glory 11 for worthless idols.
Be appalled at this, O heavens, 12 and shudder with great horror," 12 declares the Lord.
"My people have committed two sins: 13 They have forsaken me, 13 the spring of living water, 13 and have dug their own cisterns, 13 broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
