Jeremiah 20

Jeremiah's Complaint

Lord, you deceived[a] me, and I was deceived[b]; 7 you overpowered me and prevailed. 7 I am ridiculed all day long; 7 everyone mocks me.

Whenever I speak, I cry out 8 proclaiming violence and destruction. 8 So the word of the Lord has brought me 8 insult and reproach all day long.

But if I say, "I will not mention him 9 or speak any more in his name," 9 his word is in my heart like a fire, 9 a fire shut up in my bones. 9 I am weary of holding it in; 9 indeed, I cannot.

I hear many whispering, 10 "Terror on every side! 10 Report him! Let's report him!" 10 All my friends 10 are waiting for me to slip, saying, 10 "Perhaps he will be deceived; 10 then we will prevail over him 10 and take our revenge on him."

But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior; 11 so my persecutors will stumble and not prevail. 11 They will fail and be thoroughly disgraced; 11 their dishonor will never be forgotten.

Lord Almighty, you who examine the righteous 12 and probe the heart and mind, 12 let me see your vengeance upon them, 12 for to you I have committed my cause.

Sing to the Lord! 13 Give praise to the Lord! 13 He rescues the life of the needy 13 from the hands of the wicked.
