Corinthians 10

The idolatry in the wilderness

Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under Ex. 13:21the cloud, and all passed through Ex. 14:22;Ps. 78:13the sea;

And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;

And did all eat the same Ex. 16:15;Ps. 78:24spiritual meat;

And did all drink the same Ex. 17:6;Ps. 78:15spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that [a]followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they Num. 14:29;Ps. 106:26were overthrown in the wilderness.

Now these things were [b]our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as Num. 11:4they also lusted.

ver. 14Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, Ex. 32:6The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.

Rev. 2:14Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and Ps. 106:29fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

Neither let us tempt Christ, as Ex. 17:2,7some of them also tempted, and Num. 21:6were destroyed of serpents.

Neither murmur ye, as Ex. 16:2some of them also murmured, and Num. 14:37were destroyed of Ex. 12:23the destroyer.

Now all these things happened unto them for [c]ensamples: and Rom. 15:4they are written for our admonition, Phil. 4:5;Heb. 10:25upon whom the ends of the world are come.

Wherefore Rom. 11:20let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is [d]common to man: but ch. 1:9God is faithful, Ps. 125:3;2 Pet. 2:9who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Wherefore, my dearly beloved, 2 Cor. 6:17flee from idolatry.

I speak as to ch. 8:1wise men; judge ye what I say.

Prohibition of idol feasts

Mat. 26:26The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? Acts 2:42The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

For ch. 12:27we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

Behold Rom. 4:12Israel Rom. 4:1;2 Cor. 11:18after the flesh: Lev. 3:3are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?

What say I then? ch. 8:4that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?

But I say, that the things which the Gentiles Lev. 17:7;Deut. 32:17;Ps. 106:37sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

2 Cor. 6:15Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and Deut. 32:38the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.

Do we Deut. 32:21provoke the Lord to jealousy? Ezek. 22:14are we stronger than he?

Do all to the glory of God

ch. 6:12All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

Rom. 15:1,2;ch. 13:5Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.

1 Tim. 4:4Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:

For Ex. 19:5;Ps. 24:1the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.

If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; Luke 10:7whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.

But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not ch. 8:10,12for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for Deut. 10:14;Ps. 24:1the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:

Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other's: for Rom. 14:16why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?

For if I by [e]grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that Rom. 14:6;1 Tim. 4:3,4for which I give thanks?

Col. 3:17;1 Pet. 4:11Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.

Rom. 14:13;ch. 8:13Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the [f]Gentiles, nor to Acts 20:28;1 Tim. 3:5the church of God:

Even as Rom. 15:2I please all men in all things, ver. 24not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
