1 Israel's immorality
1 Hear the word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: 1 For the Lord hath a Is. 1:18controversy with the inhabitants of the land, 1 Because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor Jer. 4:22knowledge of God in the land.
2 By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, 2 And [a]blood toucheth blood.
3 Therefore Amos 5:16shall the land mourn, 3 And Zeph. 1:3every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, 3 With the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; 3 Yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.
4 Yet let no man strive, nor reprove another: 4 For thy people are as they Deut. 17:12that strive with the priest.
5 Therefore shalt thou fall Jer. 15:8in the day, 5 And the prophet also shall fall with thee in the night, 5 And I will [b]destroy thy mother.
6 Is. 5:13My people are [c]destroyed for lack of knowledge, 6 Because thou hast rejected knowledge, 6 I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: 6 Seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, 6 I will also forget thy children.
7 As they were increased, so they sinned against me: 7 1 Sam. 2:30;Mal. 2:9Therefore will I change their glory into shame.
8 They eat up the sin of my people, 8 And they [d]set their heart on their iniquity.
9 And there shall be, Is. 24:2;Jer. 5:31like people, like priest: 9 And I will [e]punish them for their ways, 9 And [f]reward them their doings.
10 For Lev. 26:26;Mic. 6:14they shall eat, and not have enough: 10 They shall commit whoredom, and shall not increase: 10 Because they have left off to take heed to the Lord.
11 Whoredom and wine and new wine Is. 28:7take away the heart.
12 My people ask counsel at their Jer. 2:27stocks, 12 And their staff declareth unto them: 12 For Is. 44:20the spirit of whoredoms hath caused them to err, 12 And they have gone a whoring from under their God.
13 Is. 1:29;Ezek. 6:13They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, 13 And burn incense upon the hills, 13 Under oaks and poplars and elms, 13 Because the shadow thereof is good: 13 Amos 7:17;Rom. 1:28Therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, 13 And your spouses shall commit adultery.
14 [g]I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, 14 Nor your spouses when they commit adultery: 14 For themselves are separated with whores, 14 And they sacrifice with harlots: 14 Therefore the people that doth not understand shall [h]fall.
15 Though thou, Israel, play the harlot, 15 Yet let not Judah offend; 15 ch. 9:15And come not ye unto Gilgal, 15 Neither go ye up to 1 Ki. 12:29Beth-aven, 15 Amos 8:14Nor swear, The Lord liveth.
16 For Israel Jer. 3:6slideth back as a backsliding heifer: 16 Now the Lord will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
17 Ephraim is joined to idols: 17 Mat. 15:14Let him alone.
18 Their drink [i]is sour; they have committed whoredom continually: 18 Mic. 3:11Her [j]rulers with shame do love, Give ye.
19 Jer. 51:1The wind hath bound her up in her wings, 19 And Is. 1:29they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
