Isaiah 29

Doom to the city of Jerusalem

[a]Woe Ezek. 43:15,16to Ariel, to Ariel, [b]the city 2 Sam. 5:9where David dwelt! 1 Add ye year to year; let them [c]kill sacrifices.

Yet I will distress Ariel, 2 And there shall be heaviness and sorrow: 2 And it shall be unto me as Ariel.

And I will camp against thee round about, 3 And will lay siege against thee with a mount, 3 And I will raise forts against thee.

And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, 4 And thy speech shall be low out of the dust, 4 And thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, ch. 8:19out of the ground, 4 And thy speech shall [d]whisper out of the dust.

Moreover the multitude of thy ch. 25:5strangers shall be like small dust, 5 And the multitude of the terrible ones shall be Job 21:18;ch. 17:13as chaff that passeth away: 5 Yea, it shall be ch. 30:13at an instant suddenly.

ch. 28:2;& 30:30Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts 6 With thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, 6 With storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.

ch. 37:36And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, 7 Even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, 7 Shall be Job 20:8as a dream of a night vision.

Ps. 73:20It shall even be as when a hungry man dreameth, and behold, he eateth; 8 But he awaketh, and his soul is empty: 8 Or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and behold, he drinketh; 8 But he awaketh, and behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: 8 So shall the multitude of all the nations be, 8 That fight against mount Zion.

Stay yourselves, and wonder; 9 [e]Cry ye out, and cry: 9 See ch. 28:7,8They are drunken, ch. 51:21but not with wine; 9 They stagger, but not with strong drink.

For Rom. 11:8the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, 10 And hath Ps. 69:23;ch. 6:10closed your eyes: 10 The prophets and your [f]rulers, 1 Sam. 9:9the seers hath he covered.

And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a [g]book ch. 8:16that is sealed, 11 Which men deliver to one that is learned, 11 Saying, Read this, I pray thee: 11 Dan. 12:4;Rev. 5:1-5,9And he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:

And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, 12 Saying, Read this, I pray thee: 12 And he saith, I am not learned.

Wherefore the Lord said, 13 Ezek. 33:31;Mat. 15:8,9;Mark 7:6,7Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, 13 And with their lips do honour me, 13 But have removed their heart far from me, 13 And their fear towards me is taught by Col. 2:22the precept of men:

Hab. 1:5Therefore, behold, [h]I will proceed to do a marvellous work amongst this people, 14 Even a marvellous work and a wonder: 14 Jer. 49:7;Obad. 8;1 Cor. 1:19For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, 14 And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

ch. 30:1Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, 15 And their works are in the dark, 15 And Ps. 94:7they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: 16 For shall the ch. 45:9;Rom. 9:20work say of him that made it, He made me not? 16 Or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

Is it not yet a very little while, 17 And ch. 32:15Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, 17 And the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?

And ch. 35:5in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, 18 And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.

ch. 61:1The meek also [i]shall increase their joy in the Lord, 19 And Jas. 2:5the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

For the terrible one is brought to nought, and ch. 28:14,22the scorner is consumed, 20 And all that Mic. 2:1watch for iniquity are cut off:

That make a man an offender for a word, 21 And Amos 5:10,12lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, 21 And turn aside the just Prov. 28:21for a thing of nought.

Therefore thus saith the Lord, Josh. 24:3who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, 22 Jacob shall not now be ashamed, 22 Neither shall his face now wax pale.

But when he seeth his children, ch. 19:25;& 45:11;& 60:21;Eph. 2:10the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, 23 They shall sanctify my name, 23 And sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, 23 And shall fear the God of Israel.

They also ch. 28:7that erred in spirit [j]shall come to understanding, 24 And they that murmured shall learn doctrine.

Rebellious Judah to be crushed
