Isaiah 44

God's blessings upon the nation

Yet now hear, ver. 21;Jer. 30:10;& 46:27,28O Jacob my servant; 1 And Israel, whom I have chosen:

Thus saith the Lord that made thee, 2 ch. 43:1,7And formed thee from the womb, which will help thee; 2 Fear not, O Jacob, my servant; 2 And thou, Deut. 32:15Jeshurun, whom I have chosen.

For I will ch. 35:7;Joel 2:28;John 7:38;Acts 2:18pour water upon him that is thirsty, 3 And floods upon the dry ground: 3 I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, 3 And my blessing upon thine offspring:

And they shall spring up as among the grass, 4 As willows by the water courses.

One shall say, I am the Lord's; 5 And another shall call himself by the name of Jacob; 5 And another shall subscribe with his hand unto the Lord, 5 And surname himself by the name of Israel.

Judgment upon idol worship

Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, 6 And his redeemer the Lord of hosts; 6 ch. 41:4;Rev. 1:8,17;& 22:13I am the first, and I am the last; 6 And besides me there is no God.

And ch. 41:4,22who, as I, shall call, 7 And shall declare it, and set it in order for me, 7 Since I appointed the ancient people? 7 And the things that are coming, and shall come, let them shew unto them.

Fear ye not, neither be afraid: 8 ch. 41:22Have not I told thee from that time, 8 And have declared it? ch. 43:10ye are even my witnesses. 8 Is there a God besides me? 8 Yea, Deut. 4:35;& 32:39;1 Sam. 2:2;2 Sam. 22:32there is no [a]God; I know not any.

ch. 41:24They that make a graven image are all of them vanity; 9 And their [b]delectable things shall not profit; 9 And they are their own witnesses; 9 Ps. 115:4They see not, nor know; that they may be ashamed.

Who hath formed a god, or molten a graven image 10 Jer. 10:5;Hab. 2:18That is profitable for nothing?

Behold, all his fellows shall be Ps. 97:7;ch. 1:29;& 42:17ashamed: 11 And the workmen, they are of men: 11 Let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; 11 Yet they shall fear, and they shall be ashamed together.

ch. 40:19;Jer. 10:3The smith [c]with the tongs both worketh in the coals, 12 And fashioneth it with hammers, 12 And worketh it with the strength of his arms: 12 Yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth: 12 He drinketh no water, and is faint.

The carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; 13 He fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, 13 And maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; 13 That it may remain in the house.

He heweth him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, 14 Which [d]he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest: 14 He planteth an ash, and the rain doth nourish it.

Then shall it be for a man to burn: 15 For he will take thereof, and warm himself; 15 Yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; 15 Yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; 15 He maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.

He burneth part thereof in the fire; 16 With part thereof he eateth flesh; 16 He roasteth roast, and is satisfied: 16 Yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, 16 I am warm, I have seen the fire:

And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: 17 He falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, 17 And saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.

ch. 45:20They have not known nor understood: 18 For 2 Thes. 2:11he hath [e]shut their eyes, that they cannot see; 18 And their hearts, that they cannot understand.

And none ch. 46:8[f]considereth in his heart, 19 Neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, 19 I have burnt part of it in the fire; 19 Yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; 19 I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: 19 And shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? 19 Shall I fall down to [g]the stock of a tree?

He feedeth on ashes: 20 Hos. 4:12;Rom. 1:21;2 Thes. 2:11A deceived heart hath turned him aside, 20 That he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, 20 Is there not a lie in my right hand?

Remember these, O Jacob 21 And Israel; for ver. 1,2thou art my servant: 21 I have formed thee; thou art my servant: 21 O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.

ch. 43:25I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, 22 And, as a cloud, thy sins: 22 Return unto me; for ch. 43:1;1 Cor. 6:20;1 Pet. 1:18I have redeemed thee.

Ps. 69:34;ch. 42:10;& 49:13;Jer. 51:48;Rev. 18:20Sing, O ye heavens; for the Lord hath done it: 23 Shout, ye lower parts of the earth: 23 Break forth into singing, ye mountains, 23 O forest, and every tree therein: 23 For the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, 23 And glorified himself in Israel.

Cyrus to restore Jerusalem

Thus saith the Lord, ch. 43:14thy redeemer, 24 And ch. 43:1he that formed thee from the womb, 24 I am the Lord that maketh all things; 24 Job 9:8That stretcheth forth the heavens alone; 24 That spreadeth abroad the earth by myself;

That ch. 47:13frustrateth the tokens Jer. 50:36of the liars, 25 And maketh diviners mad; 25 That turneth wise men backward, 25 1 Cor. 1:20And maketh their knowledge foolish;

Zech. 1:6That confirmeth the word of his servant, 26 And performeth the counsel of his messengers; 26 That saith to Jerusalem, Thou shalt be inhabited; 26 And to the cities of Judah, Ye shall be built, 26 And I will raise up the [h]decayed places thereof:

Jer. 50:38;& 51:32,36That saith to the deep, Be dry, 27 And I will dry up thy rivers:

That saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, 28 And shall perform all my pleasure: 28 Even saying to Jerusalem, 2 Chr. 36:22;Ezra 1:1;ch. 45:13Thou shalt be built; 28 And to the temple, Thy foundation shall be laid.
