Isaiah 51

The Lord will deliver his people

Hearken to me, Rom. 9:30-32ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: 1 Look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, 1 And to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged.

Rom. 4:1;Heb. 11:11Look unto Abraham your father, 2 And unto Sarah that bare you: 2 Gen. 12:1For I called him alone, 2 And Gen. 24:35blessed him, and increased him.

For the Lord ver. 12;ch. 52:9shall comfort Zion: 3 He will comfort all her waste places; 3 And he will make her wilderness like Eden, 3 And her desert Gen. 13:10;Joel 2:3like the garden of the Lord; 3 Joy and gladness shall be found therein, 3 Thanksgiving, and the voice of melody.

Hearken unto me, my people; 4 And give ear unto me, O my nation: 4 ch. 2:3For a law shall proceed from me, 4 And I will make my judgment to rest ch. 42:6for a light of the people.

ch. 46:13;Rom. 1:16My righteousness is near; my salvation is gone forth, 5 Ps. 67:4And mine arms shall judge the people; 5 ch. 60:9The isles shall wait upon me, 5 And Rom. 1:16on mine arm shall they trust.

ch. 40:26Lift up your eyes to the heavens, 6 And look upon the earth beneath: 6 For Ps. 102:26;Mat. 24:35;2 Pet. 3:10the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, 6 ch. 50:9And the earth shall wax old like a garment, 6 And they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: 6 But my salvation shall be for ever, 6 And my righteousness shall not be abolished.

ver. 1Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, 7 The people Ps. 37:31in whose heart is my law; 7 Mat. 10:28;Acts 5:41Fear ye not the reproach of men, 7 Neither be ye afraid of their revilings.

For ch. 50:9the moth shall eat them up like a garment, 8 And the worm shall eat them like wool: 8 But my righteousness shall be for ever, 8 And my salvation from generation to generation.

Ps. 44:23Awake, awake, Ps. 93:1put on strength, O arm of the Lord; 9 Awake, Ps. 44:1as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. 9 Job 26:12Art thou not it that hath cut Ps. 87:4;& 89:10Rahab, and wounded the Ps. 74:13;Ezek. 29:3dragon?

Art thou not it which hath Ex. 14:21;ch. 43:16dried the sea, the waters of the great deep; 10 That hath made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over?

Therefore ch. 35:10the redeemed of the Lord shall return, 11 And come with singing unto Zion; 11 And everlasting joy shall be upon their head: 11 They shall obtain gladness and joy; 11 And sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

I, even I, am he 2 Cor. 1:3that comforteth you: 12 Who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid Ps. 118:6of a man that shall die, 12 And of the son of man which shall be made 1 Pet. 1:24as grass;

And forgettest the Lord thy Maker, 13 Ps. 104:2That hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; 13 And hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, 13 As if he [a]were ready to destroy? 13 Job 20:7And where is the fury of the oppressor?

The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, 14 Zech. 9:11And that he should not die in the pit, 14 Nor that his bread should fail.

But I am the Lord thy God, 15 That Job 26:12;Ps. 74:13;Jer. 31:35divided the sea, whose waves roared: 15 The Lord of hosts is his name.

And Deut. 18:18;ch. 59:21;John 3:34I have put my words in thy mouth, 16 And ch. 49:2have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, 16 ch. 65:17That I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, 16 And say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

The cup of God's fury

ch. 52:1Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, 17 Which Job 21:20;Jer. 25:15hast drunk at the hand of the Lord the cup of his fury; 17 See Deut. 28:28,34;Ps. 60:3;Ezek. 23:32-34Thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, and wrung them out.

There is none to guide her among all the sons whom she hath brought forth; 18 Neither is there any that taketh her by the hand of all the sons that she hath brought up.

ch. 47:9These two things [b]are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? 19 Desolation, and [c]destruction, and the famine, and the sword: 19 Amos 7:2By whom shall I comfort thee?

Lam. 2:11Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: 20 They are full of the fury of the Lord, the rebuke of thy God.

Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, 21 And drunken, See ver. 17;Lam. 3:15but not with wine:

Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, 22 And thy God Jer. 50:34that pleadeth the cause of his people, 22 Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, 22 Even the dregs of the cup of my fury; 22 Thou shalt no more drink it again:

But Jer. 25:17;Zech. 12:2I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; 23 Ps. 66:11Which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: 23 And thou hast laid thy body as the ground, 23 And as the street, to them that went over.

God will restore Jerusalem
