Isaiah 63

Vengeance and redemption

Who is this that cometh from Edom, 1 With dyed garments from Bozrah? 1 This that is [a]glorious in his apparel, 1 Travelling in the greatness of his strength? 1 I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

Wherefore Rev. 19:13art thou red in thine apparel, 2 And thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?

I have Lam. 1:15;Rev. 14:19,20;& 19:15trodden the winepress alone; 3 And of the people there was none with me: 3 For I will tread them in mine anger, 3 And trample them in my fury; 3 And their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, 3 And I will stain all my raiment.

For the ch. 34:8;& 61:2day of vengeance is in mine heart, 4 And the year of my redeemed is come.

ch. 41:28;& 59:16And I looked, and John 16:32there was none to help; 5 And I wondered that there was none to uphold: 5 Therefore mine own Ps. 98:1;ch. 59:16arm brought salvation unto me; 5 And my fury, it upheld me.

And I will tread down the people in mine anger, 6 And make them drunk in my fury, 6 And I will bring down their strength to the earth.

Praise to the Lord

I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the Lord, and the praises of the Lord, 7 According to all that the Lord hath bestowed on us, 7 And the great goodness towards the house of Israel, 7 Which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, 7 And according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

For he said, Surely they are my people, 8 Children that will not lie: 8 So he was their Saviour.

Judg. 10:16;Acts 9:4In all their affliction he was afflicted, 9 Ex. 14:19;Acts 12:11And the angel of his presence saved them: 9 Deut. 7:7In his love and in his pity he redeemed them; 9 And Ex. 19:4he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

But they Ex. 15:24;Ps. 95:9rebelled, and Ps. 78:40;Acts 7:51vexed his holy Spirit: 10 Ex. 23:21Therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, 11 Where is he that Ex. 14:30brought them up out of the sea with the Ps. 77:20[b]shepherd of his flock? 11 Num. 11:17Where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

That led them by the right hand of Moses Ex. 15:6with his glorious arm, 12 Josh. 3:16Dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name?

Ps. 106:9That led them through the deep, 13 As a horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble?

As a beast goeth down into the valley, 14 The Spirit of the Lord caused him to rest: 14 So didst thou lead thy people, 14 2 Sam. 7:23To make thyself a glorious name.

Judah appeals to God

Deut. 26:15;Ps. 80:14Look down from heaven, and behold 15 Ps. 33:14From the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: 15 Where is thy zeal and thy strength, 15 [c]The sounding Jer. 31:20;Hos. 11:8of thy bowels and of thy mercies towards me? are they restrained?

Deut. 32:6Doubtless thou art our father, 16 Though Abraham Job 14:21be ignorant of us, 16 And Israel acknowledge us not: 16 Thou, O Lord, art our father, [d]our redeemer; 16 Thy name is from everlasting.

Lord, why hast thou Ps. 119:10made us to err from thy ways, 17 And ch. 6:10 with John 12:40hardened our heart from thy fear? 17 Ps. 90:13Return for thy servants' sake, 17 The tribes of thine inheritance.

Deut. 7:6The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: 18 Ps. 74:7Our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.

We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; 19 [e]They were not called by thy name.
