John 7

Jesus at the feast of tabernacles

After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, ch. 5:16,18because the Jews sought to kill him.

Lev. 23:34Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.

Mat. 12:46;Mark 3:31;Acts 1:14His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

For Mark 3:21neither did his brethren believe in him.

Then Jesus said unto them, ch. 2:4;& 8:20My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.'

ch. 15:19The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, ch. 3:19because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.'

Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; ch. 8:20for my time is not yet full come.'

When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

Then ch. 11:56the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

And ch. 9:16;& 10:19there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for ver. 40;Mat. 21:46;Luke 7:16;ch. 6:14some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people.

Howbeit no man spake openly of him ch. 9:22;& 12:42;& 19:38for fear of the Jews.

Jesus teaches in the temple

Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

Mat. 13:54;Mark 6:2;Luke 4:22;Acts 2:7And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man [a]letters, having never learned?

Jesus answered them, and said, ch. 3:11;& 8:28;& 12:49;& 14:10,24My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.'

ch. 8:43If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.'

ch. 5:41;& 8:50He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.'

Ex. 24:3;Deut. 33:4;ch. 1:17;Acts 7:38Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law? Mat. 12:14;Mark 3:6;ch. 5:16,18;& 10:31,39;& 11:53Why go ye about to kill me?'

The people answered and said, ch. 8:48,52;& 10:20Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.'

Lev. 12:3Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision, not because it is of Moses, Gen. 17:10but of the fathers; and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.'

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, [b]that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because ch. 5:8,9,16I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?'

Deut. 1:16;Prov. 24:23;ch. 8:15;Jas. 2:1Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.'

Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they seek to kill?

But lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. ver. 48Do the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?

Mat. 13:55;Mark 6:3;Luke 4:22Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh, no man knoweth whence he is.

Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, ch. 8:14Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am: and ch. 5:43;& 8:42I am not come of myself, but he that sent me ch. 5:32;& 8:26;Rom. 3:4is true, ch. 1:18;& 8:55whom ye know not.'

But Mat. 11:27;ch. 10:15I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.'

Then Mark 11:18;Luke 19:47;& 20:19;ch. 8:37they sought to take him: but ver. 44no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come.

And Mat. 12:23;ch. 3:2;& 8:30many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?

The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to take him.

Then said Jesus unto them, ch. 13:33;& 16:16Yet a little while am I with you, and then I go unto him that sent me.'

Ye Hos. 5:6;ch. 8:21;& 13:33shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come.'

Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we shall not find him? will he go unto Is. 11:12;Jas. 1:1;1 Pet. 1:1the dispersed among the [c]Gentiles, and teach the [d]Gentiles?

What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?'

The last day of the feast

Lev. 23:36In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, Is. 55:1;ch. 6:35;Rev. 22:17If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.'

Deut. 18:15He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, Prov. 18:4;Is. 12:3;& 44:3;ch. 4:14out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.'

(Is. 44:3;Joel 2:28;ch. 16:7;Acts 2:17,33,38But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet ch. 12:16;& 16:7glorified.)

Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said, Of a truth this is Deut. 18:15;ch. 1:21;& 6:14the Prophet.

Others said, ch. 4:42;& 6:69This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ come ver. 52;ch. 1:46out of Galilee?

Ps. 132:11;Jer. 23:5;Mic. 5:2;Mat. 2:5;Luke 2:4Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, 1 Sam. 16:1,4where David was?

So ver. 12;ch. 9:16;& 10:19there was a division among the people because of him.

And ver. 30some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.

Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?

The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?

ch. 12:42;Acts 6:7;1 Cor. 1:20,26;& 2:8Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?

But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.

Nicodemus saith unto them, (ch. 3:2he that came [e]to Jesus by night, being one of them,)

Deut. 1:17;& 17:8;& 19:15Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he doeth?

They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee? Search, and look: for ver. 41;Is. 9:1,2;Mat. 4:15;ch. 1:46out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.

The woman caught in adultery

And every man went unto his own house.
