¹ The vanity of work without God

¹ A Song of degrees ^[a]for Solomon.

¹ Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain ^[b]that build it: ¹ Except Ps. 121:3-5the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

² It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, ² To Gen. 3:17,19eat the bread of sorrows: ² For so he giveth his beloved sleep.

³ Lo, Gen. 33:5;& 48:4;Josh. 24:3,4children are an heritage of the Lord: ³ And Deut. 28:4the fruit of the womb is his reward.

⁴ As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; ⁴ So are children of the youth.

⁵ Happy is the man that ^[c]hath his quiver full of them: ⁵ Job 5:4;Prov. 27:11They shall not be ashamed, ⁵ But they ^[d]shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
