Psalms 140

For protection against enemies

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

Deliver me, O Lord, from the evil man: 1 Preserve me from the [a]violent man;

Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; 2 Ps. 56:6Continually are they gathered together for war.

They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; 3 Ps. 58:4Adder's poison is under their lips. Selah.

Ps. 71:4Keep me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; 4 Preserve me from the violent man; 4 Who have purposed to overthrow my goings.

Jer. 18:22The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; 5 They have spread a net by the way side; 5 They have set grins for me. Selah.

I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: 6 Hear the voice of my supplications, O Lord.

O God the Lord, the strength of my salvation, 7 Thou hast covered my head in the day of battle.

Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked: 8 Further not his wicked device; 8 Deut. 32:27[b]Lest they exalt themselves. Selah.

As for the head of those that compass me about, 9 Ps. 7:16Let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

Ps. 11:6Let burning coals fall upon them: 10 Let them be cast into the fire; 10 Into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

Let not [c][d]an evil speaker be established in the earth: 11 Evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

I know that the Lord will Ps. 9:4maintain the cause of the afflicted, 12 And the right of the poor.

Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto thy name: 13 The upright shall dwell in thy presence.

Conduct amidst trial
