Psalms 71

The prayer of an aged man

In Ps. 25:2,3thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: 1 Let me never be put to confusion.

Ps. 31:1Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: 2 Ps. 17:6Incline thine ear unto me, and save me.

Ps. 31:2,3[a]Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: 3 Thou hast given Ps. 44:4commandment to save me; 3 For thou art my rock and my fortress.

Ps. 140:1,4Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, 4 Out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.

For thou art Jer. 17:7my hope, O Lord God: 5 Thou art my trust from my youth.

Ps. 22:9,10;Is 46:3By thee have I been holden up from the womb: 6 Thou art he that took me out of my mother's bowels: 6 My praise shall be continually of thee.

Is. 8:18I am as a wonder unto many; 7 But thou art my strong refuge.

Let Ps. 35:28my mouth be filled with thy praise 8 And with thy honour all the day.

ver. 18Cast me not off in the time of old age; 9 Forsake me not when my strength faileth.

For mine enemies speak against me; 10 And they that [b]lay wait for my soul 2 Sam. 17:1;Mat. 27:1take counsel together,

Saying, God hath forsaken him: 11 Persecute and take him; for there is none to deliver him.

Ps. 35:22O God, be not far from me: 12 O my God, Ps. 70:1make haste for my help.

ver. 24Let them be confounded and consumed that are adversaries to my soul; 13 Let them be covered with reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.

But I will hope continually, 14 And will yet praise thee more and more.

Ps. 35:28My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness 15 And thy salvation all the day; 15 For Ps. 40:5I know not the numbers thereof.

I will go in the strength of the Lord God: 16 I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only.

O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: 17 And hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.

ver. 9Now also [c]when I am old and grayheaded, 18 O God, forsake me not; 18 Until I have shewed [d]thy strength unto this generation, 18 And thy power to every one that is to come.

Ps. 57:10Thy righteousness also, O God, is very high, 19 Who hast done great things: 19 Ps. 35:10O God, who is like unto thee!

Ps. 60:3Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, 20 Hos. 6:1,2Shalt quicken me again, 20 And shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.

Thou shalt increase my greatness, 21 And comfort me on every side.

I will also praise thee Ps. 92:1-3[e]with the psaltery, 22 Even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing 22 With the harp, O thou 2 Ki. 19:22;Is. 60:9Holy One of Israel.

My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; 23 And Ps. 103:4my soul, which thou hast redeemed.

My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: 24 For they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.

A prayer for the king
