God's guidance of his people
Ps. 74, title[a]Maschil of Asaph.
Is. 51:4Give ear, O my people, to my law: 1 Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
Mat. 13:35I will open my mouth in a parable: 2 I will utter dark sayings of old:
Ps. 44:1Which we have heard and known, 3 And our fathers have told us.
Deut. 6:7;Joel 1:3We will not hide them from their children, 4 Ex. 13:8,14Shewing to the generation to come 4 The praises of the Lord, and his strength, 4 And his wonderful works that he hath done.
For Ps. 147:19he established a testimony in Jacob, 5 And appointed a law in Israel, 5 Which he commanded our fathers, 5 Deut. 4:9That they should make them known to their children:
Ps. 102:18That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; 6 Who should arise and declare them to their children:
That they might set their hope in God, 7 And not forget the works of God, 7 But keep his commandments:
And 2 Ki. 17:14might not be as their fathers, 8 Ex. 32:9A stubborn and rebellious generation; 8 A generation ver. 37[b]that set not their heart aright, 8 And whose spirit was not stedfast with God.
The children of Ephraim, being armed, and [c]carrying bows, 9 Turned back in the day of battle.
2 Ki. 17:15They kept not the covenant of God, 10 And refused to walk in his law;
And Ps. 106:13forgat his works, 11 And his wonders that he had shewed them.
Ex. 7-12Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, 12 In the land of Egypt, Num. 13:22in the field of Zoan.
Ex. 14:21He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through; 13 And Ex. 15:8he made the waters to stand as a heap.
Ex. 13:21In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, 14 And all the night with a light of fire.
Num. 20:11He clave the rocks in the wilderness, 15 And gave them drink as out of the great depths.
He brought Deut. 9:21streams also out of the rock, 16 And caused waters to run down like rivers.
And they sinned yet more against him 17 By Heb. 3:16provoking the most High in the wilderness.
And Ex. 16:2they tempted God in their heart 18 By asking meat for their lust.
Num. 11:4Yea, they spake against God; they said, 19 Can God [d]furnish a table in the wilderness?
Num. 20:11Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, 20 And the streams overflowed; 20 Can he give bread also? 20 Can he provide flesh for his people?
Therefore the Lord heard this, and Num. 11:1was wroth: 21 So a fire was kindled against Jacob, 21 And anger also came up against Israel;
Because they Heb. 3:18believed not in God, 22 And trusted not in his salvation:
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, 23 Mal. 3:10And opened the doors of heaven,
John 6:31And had rained down manna upon them to eat, 24 And had given them of the corn of heaven.
[e]Man did eat angels' food: 25 He sent them meat to the full.
Num. 11:31He caused an east wind [f]to blow in the heaven: 26 And by his power he brought in the south wind.
He rained flesh also upon them as dust, 27 And [g]feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea:
And he let it fall in the midst of their camp, 28 Round about their habitations.
Num. 11:20So they did eat, and were well filled: 29 For he gave them their own desire;
They were not estranged from their lust. 30 But Num. 11:33while their meat was yet in their mouths,
The wrath of God came upon them, 31 And slew the fattest of them, 31 And [h]smote down the [i]chosen men of Israel.
For all this Num. 14;& 16;& 17they sinned still, 32 And ver. 22believed not for his wondrous works.
Num. 14:29Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, 33 And their years in trouble.
Hos. 5:15When he slew them, then they sought him: 34 And they returned and inquired early after God.
And they remembered that Deut. 32:4,15,31God was their rock, 35 And the high God Is. 41:14;& 63:9their redeemer.
Nevertheless they did Ezek. 33:31flatter him with their mouth, 36 And they lied unto him with their tongues.
For their heart was not right with him, 37 Neither were they stedfast in his covenant.
Num. 14:18,20But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: 38 Yea, many a time Is. 48:9turned he his anger away, 38 1 Ki. 21:29And did not stir up all his wrath.
For Ps. 103:14he remembered John 3:6that they were but flesh; 39 Job 7:7,16A wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.
How oft did they Ps. 95:8-10;Heb. 3:16[j]provoke him in the wilderness, 40 And grieve him in the desert!
Yea, Num. 14:22;Deut. 6:16they turned back and tempted God, 41 And limited the Holy One of Israel.
They remembered not his hand: 42 Nor the day when he delivered them [k]from the enemy.
How he had [l]wrought his signs in Egypt, 43 And his wonders in the field of Zoan:
Ex. 7:20;Ps. 105:29And had turned their rivers into blood; 44 And their floods, that they could not drink.
Ex. 8:24;Ps. 105:31He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them; 45 And Ex. 8:6frogs, which destroyed them.
He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, 46 And their labour unto the locust.
Ex. 9:23,25;Ps. 105:33He [m]destroyed their vines with hail, 47 And their sycomore trees with [n]frost.
Ex. 9:23-25[o]He gave up their cattle also to the hail, 48 And their flocks to [p]hot thunderbolts.
He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, 49 Wrath, and indignation, and trouble, 49 By sending evil angels among them.
[q]He made a way to his anger; 50 He spared not their soul from death, 50 But gave [r]their life over to the pestilence;
Ex. 12:29And smote all the firstborn in Egypt; 51 The chief of their strength in Ps. 106:22the tabernacles of Ham:
But Ps. 77:20made his own people to go forth like sheep, 52 And guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
And he Ex. 14:19led them on safely, so that they feared not: 53 But the sea Ex. 14:27[s]overwhelmed their enemies.
And he brought them to the border of his Ex. 15:17sanctuary, 54 Even to this mountain, Ps. 44:3which his right hand had purchased.
Ps. 44:2He cast out the heathen also before them, 55 And Josh. 13:7divided them an inheritance by line, 55 And made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.
Judg. 2:11Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, 56 And kept not his testimonies:
But Ezek. 20:27turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers: 57 They were turned aside Hos. 7:16like a deceitful bow.
Deut. 32:16,21;Judg. 2:12For they provoked him to anger with their Deut. 12:2high places, 58 And moved him to jealousy with their graven images.
When God heard this, he was wroth, 59 And greatly abhorred Israel:
So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, 60 The tent which he placed among men;
Judg. 18:30And delivered his strength into captivity, 61 And his glory into the enemy's hand.
1 Sam. 4:10He gave his people over also unto the sword; 62 And was wroth with his inheritance.
The fire consumed their young men; 63 And Jer. 7:34their maidens were not [t]given to marriage.
1 Sam. 22:18Their priests fell by the sword; 64 And Job 27:15their widows made no lamentation.
Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, 65 And Is. 42:13like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
And 1 Sam. 5:6he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: 66 He put them to a perpetual reproach.
Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, 67 And chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
But chose the tribe of Judah, 68 The mount Zion Ps. 87:2which he loved.
And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, 69 Like the earth which he hath [u]established for ever.
1 Sam. 16:11,12He chose David also his servant, 70 And took him from the sheepfolds:
[v]From following Is. 40:11the ewes great with young he brought him 71 2 Sam. 5:2To feed Jacob his people, 71 And Israel his inheritance.
So he fed them according to the 1 Ki. 9:4integrity of his heart; 72 And guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
A lament for Jerusalem
