Israel was like a spreading vine. 1 They produced fruit for themselves. 1 As they grew more fruit, 1 they built more altars. 1 As their land became richer, 1 they made the sacred stones they worshiped more beautiful.
The people who live in Samaria are filled with fear. 5 They are afraid their god that looks like a calf 5 will be carried off from Bethel. 5 They will sob over it. 5 So will the priests who lead them to worship it. 5 The priests were full of joy 5 because their statue was so glorious. 5 But it will be captured 5 and taken far away from them.
It will be carried off to Assyria. 6 The people of Ephraim will be forced 6 to give it to the great king. 6 They will be dishonored. 6 Israel will be ashamed 6 that all they have left to worship is a wooden god.
The high places where Israel worshiped other gods 8 will be destroyed. 8 That's where they sinned against the Lord. 8 Thorns and weeds will grow up there. 8 They will cover the altars. 8 Then the people will say to the mountains, "Cover us!" 8 They'll say to the hills, "Fall on us!"
Ephraim, you were like a well-trained young cow. 11 It loved to thresh grain. 11 I spared its pretty neck 11 from pulling heavy loads. 11 But now I will make you do hard work. 11 Judah also must plow. 11 So all of the people of Jacob 11 must break up the ground.
Your hearts are as hard as a field 12 that has not been plowed. 12 If you change your ways, 12 you will produce good crops. 12 So plant the seeds of doing what is right. 12 Then you will harvest the fruit of your faithful love. 12 It is time to turn to me. 12 When you do, I will come 12 and shower my blessings on you.
But you have planted the seeds of doing what is wrong. 13 So you have harvested the fruit of your evil conduct. 13 You have had to eat the fruit of your lies. 13 You have trusted in your own strength. 13 You have depended on your many soldiers.
But the roar of battle will come against you. 14 All of your forts will be completely destroyed. 14 It will happen just as Shalman 14 destroyed Beth Arbel in a battle. 14 Mothers and their children 14 were smashed on the ground.
