Those who are right with God die. 1 And no one really cares about it. 1 Those who are faithful to the Lord are swept away by trouble. 1 And no one understands why that happens 1 to those who do what is right.
You have chosen some of the smooth stones in the valleys to be your gods. 6 You have joined yourselves to them. 6 You have even poured out drink offerings to them. 6 You have given grain offerings to them. 6 So why should I take pity on you?
You have set up statues to remind you of your gods. 8 You have put them behind your doors and doorposts. 8 You deserted me. You invited other lovers into your bed. 8 You climbed into it and welcomed them. 8 You made a deal with them. 8 And you looked at their naked bodies.
"Who are you so afraid of 11 that you have not been true to me? 11 You have not remembered me. 11 You do not even care about me. 11 I have not punished you for a long time. 11 That is why you are not afraid of me.
Go ahead and cry out for help to all of the statues of your gods. 13 See if they can save you! 13 The wind will carry them off. 13 Just a puff of air will blow them away. 13 But those who come to me for safety 13 will receive the land. 13 They will possess my holy mountain of Zion."
The Lord Comforts Those Who Aren't Proud
The One who is highly honored lives forever. 15 His name is holy. He says, 15 "I live in a high and holy place. 15 But I also live with those who turn away from their sins. 15 I live with those who are not proud. 15 I give new life to those who are not proud. 15 I give it to those who turn away from their sins.
I will not find fault with my people forever. 16 I will not always be angry with them. 16 If I were, I would cause their spirits to grow weak. 16 The very breath of life would go out of the people I created.
I was very angry with them. 17 They always longed for more and more of everything. 17 So I punished them for that sin. 17 I turned my face away from them because I was angry. 17 But they kept on wanting their own way.
I have seen what they have done. 18 But I will heal them. 18 I will guide them. 18 And I will comfort them just as I did before. 19 Then the people of Israel who are sorry for their sins will praise me. 19 I will give perfect peace to those who are far away and those who are near. 19 And I will heal them," says the Lord.
"There is no peace for those who are evil," says my God.
