1 The Lord's Message About the Nations
1 A message came to me from the Lord. It was about the nations.
1 A Message About Egypt
2 Here is what the Lord says about Egypt.
2 Here is his message against the army of Pharaoh Neco. He was king of Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylonia, won the battle over his army. That happened at Carchemish on the Euphrates River. It was in the fourth year that Jehoiakim was king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah.
2 The message says,
5 What do I see? 5 The Egyptians are terrified. 5 They are pulling back. 5 Their soldiers are losing. 5 They run away as fast as they can. 5 They do not look back. 5 There is terror on every side," 5 announces the Lord.
10 But that day belongs to me. 10 I am the Lord who rules over all. 10 It is a day for me to pay back my enemies. 10 The sword will eat until it is satisfied. 10 It will drink until it has no more thirst for blood. 10 I am the Lord. I am the Lord who rules over all. 10 I will offer a sacrifice. 10 I will offer it in the land of the north 10 by the Euphrates River.
13 Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylonia, was coming to attack Egypt. Here is the message the Lord spoke to me about it. He said,
14 "Egyptians, here is what I want you to announce in your land. 14 Announce it in Migdol. 14 Also announce it in Memphis and Tahpanhes. 14 Say, 'Take up your battle positions! Get ready! 14 The sword eats up those who are around you.'
16 They will trip again and again. 16 They will fall over one another. 16 They will say, 'Get up. Let's go back home. 16 Let's return to our own people and our own lands. 16 Let's get away from the swords 16 that will bring us great harm.'
18 "I am the King. 18 My name is The Lord Who Rules Over All. 18 Someone will come who is like Mount Tabor among the mountains. 18 He is like Mount Carmel by the Mediterranean Sea. 18 And that is just as sure as I am alive," 18 announces the King.
21 Hired soldiers are in Egypt's army. 21 They are like fat calves. 21 All of them will turn and run away. 21 They will not hold their positions. 21 The day of trouble is coming on them. 21 The time for them to be punished is near.
22 The Egyptians will hiss like a snake that is trying to get away. 22 A powerful army will advance against them. 22 Their enemies will come against them with axes. 22 They will be like those who cut down trees.
25 The Lord who rules over all is the God of Israel. He says, "I am about to punish Amon, the god of Thebes. I will also punish Pharaoh. I will punish Egypt and its gods and kings. And I will punish those who depend on Pharaoh. 26 I will hand them over to those who are trying to kill them. I will give them to Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylonia, and his officers. But later, many people will live in Egypt again as in times past," announces the Lord.
27 "People of Jacob, do not be afraid. 27 You are my servant. 27 Israel, do not be terrified. 27 I will bring you safely out of a place far away. 27 I will bring your children back 27 from the land where they were taken. 27 Your people will have peace and security again. 27 And no one will make them afraid.
28 People of Jacob, do not be afraid. 28 You are my servant. 28 I am with you," announces the Lord. 28 "I will completely destroy all of the nations 28 among which I scatter you. 28 But I will not completely destroy you. 28 I will correct you. But I will be fair. 28 I will punish you in a way that is fair and right."
