Isaiah 27

Deliverance of Israel

In that day, 1 the Lord will punish with his sword, 1 his fierce, great and powerful sword, 1 Leviathan the gliding serpent, 1 Leviathan the coiling serpent; 1 he will slay the monster of the sea.

In that day— 2 "Sing about a fruitful vineyard: 3 I, the Lord, watch over it; 3 I water it continually. 3 I guard it day and night 3 so that no one may harm it. 4 I am not angry. 4 If only there were briers and thorns confronting me! 4 I would march against them in battle; 4 I would set them all on fire.

Or else let them come to me for refuge; 5 let them make peace with me, 5 yes, let them make peace with me."

In days to come Jacob will take root, 6 Israel will bud and blossom 6 and fill all the world with fruit.

Has the Lord struck her 7 as he struck down those who struck her? 7 Has she been killed 7 as those were killed who killed her?

By warfare[a] and exile you contend with her— 8 with his fierce blast he drives her out, 8 as on a day the east wind blows.

By this, then, will Jacob's guilt be atoned for, 9 and this will be the full fruitage of the removal of his sin: 9 When he makes all the altar stones 9 to be like chalk stones crushed to pieces, 9 no Asherah poles[b] or incense altars 9 will be left standing.

The fortified city stands desolate, 10 an abandoned settlement, forsaken like the desert; 10 there the calves graze, 10 there they lie down; 10 they strip its branches bare.

When its twigs are dry, they are broken off 11 and women come and make fires with them. 11 For this is a people without understanding; 11 so their Maker has no compassion on them, 11 and their Creator shows them no favor.

In that day the Lord will thresh from the flowing Euphrates[c] to the Wadi of Egypt, and you, O Israelites, will be gathered up one by one. 13 And in that day a great trumpet will sound. Those who were perishing in Assyria and those who were exiled in Egypt will come and worship the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.
