Amos 1

The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash[a] was king of Israel.

He said: 2 "The Lord roars from Zion 2 and thunders from Jerusalem; 2 the pastures of the shepherds dry up,[b] 2 and the top of Carmel withers."

3

Judgment on Israel's Neighbors

This is what the Lord says: 3 "For three sins of Damascus, 3 even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. 3 Because she threshed Gilead 3 with sledges having iron teeth,

I will send fire upon the house of Hazael 4 that will consume the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.

I will break down the gate of Damascus; 5 I will destroy the king who is in[c] the Valley of Aven[d] 5 and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden. 5 The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir," 5 says the Lord.

This is what the Lord says: 6 "For three sins of Gaza, 6 even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. 6 Because she took captive whole communities 6 and sold them to Edom,

I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza 7 that will consume her fortresses.

I will destroy the king[e] of Ashdod 8 and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon. 8 I will turn my hand against Ekron, 8 till the last of the Philistines is dead," 8 says the Sovereign Lord.

This is what the Lord says: 9 "For three sins of Tyre, 9 even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. 9 Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom, 9 disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,

I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre 10 that will consume her fortresses."

This is what the Lord says: 11 "For three sins of Edom, 11 even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. 11 Because he pursued his brother with a sword, 11 stifling all compassion,[f] 11 because his anger raged continually 11 and his fury flamed unchecked,

I will send fire upon Teman 12 that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah."

This is what the Lord says: 13 "For three sins of Ammon, 13 even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. 13 Because he ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead 13 in order to extend his borders,

I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah 14 that will consume her fortresses 14 amid war cries on the day of battle, 14 amid violent winds on a stormy day.

Her king[g] will go into exile, 15 he and his officials together," 15 says the Lord.
