Amos 1

¹ The words of Amos, one of the shepherds of Tekoa—what he saw concerning Israel two years before the earthquake, when Uzziah was king of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash^[a] was king of Israel.

² He said: ² "The Lord roars from Zion ² and thunders from Jerusalem; ² the pastures of the shepherds dry up,^[b] ² and the top of Carmel withers."

³ Judgment on Israel's Neighbors

³ This is what the Lord says: ³ "For three sins of Damascus, ³ even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. ³ Because she threshed Gilead ³ with sledges having iron teeth,

⁴ I will send fire upon the house of Hazael ⁴ that will consume the fortresses of Ben-Hadad.

⁵ I will break down the gate of Damascus; ⁵ I will destroy the king who is in^[c] the Valley of Aven^[d] ⁵ and the one who holds the scepter in Beth Eden. ⁵ The people of Aram will go into exile to Kir," ⁵ says the Lord.

⁶ This is what the Lord says: ⁶ "For three sins of Gaza, ⁶ even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. ⁶ Because she took captive whole communities ⁶ and sold them to Edom,

⁷ I will send fire upon the walls of Gaza ⁷ that will consume her fortresses.

⁸ I will destroy the king^[e] of Ashdod ⁸ and the one who holds the scepter in Ashkelon. ⁸ I will turn my hand against Ekron, ⁸ till the last of the Philistines is dead," ⁸ says the Sovereign Lord.

⁹ This is what the Lord says: ⁹ "For three sins of Tyre, ⁹ even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. ⁹ Because she sold whole communities of captives to Edom, ⁹ disregarding a treaty of brotherhood,

¹⁰ I will send fire upon the walls of Tyre ¹⁰ that will consume her fortresses."

¹¹ This is what the Lord says: ¹¹ "For three sins of Edom, ¹¹ even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. ¹¹ Because he pursued his brother with a sword, ¹¹ stifling all compassion,^[f] ¹¹ because his anger raged continually ¹¹ and his fury flamed unchecked,

¹² I will send fire upon Teman ¹² that will consume the fortresses of Bozrah."

¹³ This is what the Lord says: ¹³ "For three sins of Ammon, ¹³ even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. ¹³ Because he ripped open the pregnant women of Gilead ¹³ in order to extend his borders,

¹⁴ I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah ¹⁴ that will consume her fortresses ¹⁴ amid war cries on the day of battle, ¹⁴ amid violent winds on a stormy day.

¹⁵ Her king^[g] will go into exile, ¹⁵ he and his officials together," ¹⁵ says the Lord.
