True Fasting
For day after day they seek me out; 2 they seem eager to know my ways, 2 as if they were a nation that does what is right 2 and has not forsaken the commands of its God. 2 They ask me for just decisions 2 and seem eager for God to come near them.
'Why have we fasted,' they say, 3 'and you have not seen it? 3 Why have we humbled ourselves, 3 and you have not noticed?' 3 "Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please 3 and exploit all your workers.
Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, 5 only a day for people to humble themselves? 5 Is it only for bowing one's head like a reed 5 and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? 5 Is that what you call a fast, 5 a day acceptable to the Lord?
The Lord will guide you always; 11 he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land 11 and will strengthen your frame. 11 You will be like a well-watered garden, 11 like a spring whose waters never fail.
"If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath 13 and from doing as you please on my holy day, 13 if you call the Sabbath a delight 13 and the Lord's holy day honorable, 13 and if you honor it by not going your own way 13 and not doing as you please or speaking idle words,
then you will find your joy in the Lord, 14 and I will cause you to ride in triumph on the heights of the land 14 and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob." 14 For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.
