God and Idols 1 10:12-16pp — Jer 51:15-19
Hear what the Lord says to you, house of Israel. 2 This is what the Lord says: 2 "Do not learn the ways of the nations 2 or be terrified by signs in the sky, 2 though the nations are terrified by them.
For the practices of the peoples are worthless; 3 they cut a tree out of the forest, 3 and a skilled worker shapes it with a chisel.
They adorn it with silver and gold; 4 they fasten it with hammer and nails 4 so it will not totter.
Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, 5 their idols cannot speak; 5 they must be carried 5 because they cannot walk. 5 Do not fear them; 5 they can do no harm 5 nor can they do any good."
No one is like you, Lord; 6 you are great, 6 and your name is mighty in power.
Who should not fear you, 7 King of the nations? 7 This is your due. 7 Among all the wise rulers of the nations 7 and in all their kingdoms, 7 there is no one like you.
They are all senseless and foolish; 8 they are taught by worthless wooden idols.
Hammered silver is brought from Tarshish 9 and gold from Uphaz. 9 What the goldsmith and engraver have made 9 is then dressed in blue and purple— 9 all made by skilled workers.
But the Lord is the true God; 10 he is the living God, the eternal King. 10 When he is angry, the earth trembles; 10 the nations cannot endure his wrath.
"Tell them this: 'These gods, who did not make the heavens and the earth, will perish from the earth and from under the heavens.' "[a]
But God made the earth by his power; 12 he founded the world by his wisdom 12 and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.
When he thunders, the waters in the heavens roar; 13 he makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth. 13 He sends lightning with the rain 13 and brings out the wind from his storehouses.
Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; 14 all goldsmiths are shamed by their idols. 14 Their images are a fraud; 14 they have no breath in them.
They are worthless, the objects of mockery; 15 when their judgment comes, they will perish.
He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, 16 for he is the Maker of all things, 16 including Israel, the tribe of his inheritance— 16 the Lord Almighty is his name.

Coming Destruction
Gather up your belongings to leave the land, 17 you who live under siege.
For this is what the Lord says: 18 "At this time I will hurl out 18 those who live in this land; 18 I will bring distress on them 18 so that they may be captured."
Woe to me because of my injury! 19 My wound is incurable! 19 Yet I said to myself, 19 "This is my sickness, and I must endure it."
My tent is destroyed; 20 all its ropes are snapped. 20 My children are gone from me and are no more; 20 no one is left now to pitch my tent 20 or to set up my shelter.
The shepherds are senseless 21 and do not inquire of the Lord; 21 so they do not prosper 21 and all their flock is scattered.
Listen! The report is coming— 22 a great commotion from the land of the north! 22 It will make the towns of Judah desolate, 22 a haunt of jackals.

Jeremiah's Prayer
Lord, I know that people's lives are not their own; 23 it is not for them to direct their steps.
Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure— 24 not in your anger, 24 or you will reduce me to nothing.
Pour out your wrath on the nations 25 that do not acknowledge you, 25 on the peoples who do not call on your name. 25 For they have devoured Jacob; 25 they have devoured him completely 25 and destroyed his homeland.
