1 1 For the director of music. To the tune of "A Dove on Distant Oaks." Of David. A miktam.[a] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath. 1 +056:1-13 is numbered 56:2-14 in Hebrew texts.+1
Be merciful to me, my God, 1 for my enemies are in hot pursuit; 1 all day long they press their attack.
My adversaries pursue me all day long; 2 in their pride many are attacking me.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. 4 In God, whose word I praise— 4 in God I trust and am not afraid. 4 What can mere mortals do to me?
All day long they twist my words; 5 all their schemes are for my ruin.
They conspire, they lurk, 6 they watch my steps, 6 hoping to take my life.
Because of their wickedness do not[b] let them escape; 7 in your anger, God, bring the nations down.
Record my misery; 8 list my tears on your scroll[c]— 8 are they not in your record?
Then my enemies will turn back 9 when I call for help. 9 By this I will know that God is for me.
In God, whose word I praise, 10 in the Lord, whose word I praise—
in God I trust and am not afraid. 11 What can mere human beings do to me?
I am under vows to you, my God; 12 I will present my thank offerings to you.
For you have delivered me from death 13 and my feet from stumbling, 13 that I may walk before God 13 in the light of life.
