Why did the Magi come?
They were looking for “Messiah the Prince” of Daniel’s
prophecy
An examination of Daniel’s prophecy shows why
they expected Jesus at this time
Daniel 9:24-26 - “Seventy weeks are determined
upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the
transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to
make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in
everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision
and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Know
therefore and understand, that from the going forth
of the commandment to restore and to build
Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be
seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the
street shall be built again, and the wall, even in
troublous times. And after threescore and two
weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:
and the people of the prince that shall come shall
destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end
thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of
the war desolations are determined.”
It would be 69 “weeks” from King Cyrus’ decree to send a remnant back to Jerusalem under Ezra & Nehemiah to
restore the city & the temple until the saviour came.
Prophetically - 1 week = 7 years
69x7=483 years
The wise men kept track from generation to generation
for 483 years and knew the time was at hand for
Daniel’s prophecy to be fulfilled & now came
seeking.
They did not follow star - simply saw star in the east
Appeared to signal them to start
already knew seeking King of the Jews
naturally went to Jewish capital
Only when came to Bethlehem did star
lead & stop over where Jesus was
God and the Spider
During World War II, a US marine was separated from his unit on a Pacific island. The fighting had been intense, and in the smoke and the crossfire he had lost touch with his comrades.
Alone in the jungle, he could hear enemy soldiers coming in his direction. Scrambling for cover, he found his way up a high ridge to several small caves in the rock. Quickly he crawled inside one of the caves. Although safe for the moment, he realized that once the enemy soldiers looking for him swept up the ridge, they would quickly search all the caves and he would be killed.
As he waited, he prayed, "Lord, if it be your will, please protect me. Whatever your will though, I love you and trust you. Amen."
After praying, he lay quietly listening to the enemy begin to draw close. He thought, "Well, I guess the Lord isn’t going to help me out of this one." Then he saw a spider begin to build a web over the front of his cave. As he watched, listening to the enemy searching for him all the while, the spider layered strand after strand of web across the opening of the cave.
“Hah, he thought. "What I need is a brick wall and what the Lord has sent me is a spider web. God does have a sense of humor."
As the enemy drew closer he watched from the darkness of his hideout and could see them searching one cave after another. As they came to his, he got ready to make his last stand. To his amazement, however, after glancing in the direction of his cave, they moved on. Suddenly, he realized that with the spider web over the entrance, his cave looked as if no one had entered for quite a while. "Lord, forgive me," prayed the young man. GOD CALLS BUSY PEOPLE
In the Bible, God never goes to the lazy or the idle when He needs men (or women) for His service. He goes to those who are already at work — the busy person:

A Graduates Call
(Lord, teach us to pray)
Once Christian Graduates are continually feeding on the Word of God, the Holy Spirit will move them to be like the disciple who came to Jesus and said, "...Lord teach us to pray..." (Luke 11:1)
A popular term used today is "What would Jesus do." He would pray about everything. Jesus prayed at His baptism, (Luke 3:21) He prayed before the choosing of the twelve, (Luke 6:12) when the crowds began to increase, (Luke 5:16) before He asked the twelve for their confession of faith, (Luke 9:18) and at His Transfiguration. (Luke 9:29) The disciples knew that He often prayed alone (Mark 1:25) and it is only natural that those who know Him would ask Him to teach them to pray. If Jesus Christ, the perfect Son of God depended on prayer during His days on this earth (Hebrews 5:7) then why should it seem out of place for us to be obedient to God's Word that tells us to, "...pray continually..." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
Prayer finds its heart in the personality of God, His ability and willingness to communicate with us through the power of the Holy Spirit. It involves a sure knowing that He has personal control in everything in our lives, in all things and over all creatures. Christians who believe these truths have no problem connecting with God in prayer. Abraham's servant connected in prayer and the Lord directed him to the person who should be the wife to his master's son. (Genesis 24:10-20)
Christian graduates are to be like Ezra and Nehemiah. Nehemiah prayed and asked the Lord to grant him favor with the Emperor of Persia. (Nehemiah 1:4-11) Ezra knew that it was God who put it in the king's heart to honor the house of the Lord. (Ezra 7:27-28)
Christian graduates who will enjoy Biblical success are those who will approach Jesus in every part of their lives and say, "Jesus, teach us to pray!
When it comes to dreams and visions you have to be like Nehemiah and say, "I ain't got time to come down, I’m too busy working".
I’ll Get Back to You! (08.04.05--Boldness Too!--Acts 3:11)
“Let me think about it and I’ll get back to you.” How often have you heard that said in your life. If we could count the number of times action has been spared by inaction due to the “thought process” necessary beforehand, we’d probably have lost count a long time ago.
In fact, I would have to bet that “I’ll get back to you” is one of the most common five-letter phrases in the English language. Not that planning ahead of our actions is something to be avoided. The Bible tells us that planning is a necessary part of doing. If Moses had not planned the long march through the Sinai would have been that much more tedious. If David or Solomon had not planned, the building of the temple would have been more laborious. Nehemiah’s plans enabled an incredible rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem in a very short time. No, planning is a necessary part of doing. Unfortunately, as with so many things in this life, we often substitute planning for thinking. Rather than taking the time and effort to think through something on the moment, we often procrastinate and hope that our “thinker” will do better on the morrow. How often this can lead to poor timing, even negligence on our part when time is of the essence.
Dr. J.B. Gambrel tells an amusing story from General Stonewall Jackson’s famous valley campaign. Jackson’s army found itself on one side of a river when it needed to be on the other side. After telling his engineers to plan and build a bridge so the army could cross, he called his wagon master in to tell him that it was urgent the wagon train cross the river as soon as possible. The wagon master started gathering all the logs, rocks and fence rails he could find and built a bridge. Long before daylight General Jackson was told by his wagon master all the wagons and artillery had crossed the river. General Jackson asked where are the engineers and what are they doing? The wagon master’s only reply was that they were in their tent drawing up plans for a bridge. (Pulpit Helps, May, 1991.)

VIGILANCE AT THE WALL
The 4,000-mile-long Great Wall of China was built to keep invaders from the north. The first wall was constructed by Shi Huangdi, the first emperor of China, who lived between 259 – 210 BC. But is AD 1644 the Manchus broke through the Great Wall and overran China. They did this by bribing a general of the Ming dynasty to open the gates.
During the reconstruction of ancient Jerusalem, Nehemiah understood the acute danger posed by those who opposed the rebuilding of the city’s ruined walls. So he commanded constant vigilance. Half of the workers were to stand watch while half rebuilt the walls.
As Christians, we must be vigilant that nothing breaches our spiritual defenses. Even the most mature believer can never afford to let down his guard.
Should we strive to be like Jesus! Of course! But He was perfect, and for me, there’s always a little sense within that I know I am going to fall short of that perfection. I know I should keep it as a goal before me. Frankly, if I aim for that, I’ll get nearer than if I don’t, and if I am devoted in my heart to yielding to the Lord, I will succeed in that more often than I fail.
But I am also encouraged because I can look at the life of another human being -- a flesh and blood man such as I, imperfect in his humanity but still a great Saint of God, a man whose life is laid out for me in such a way that he comes to life before my eyes. And then I can watch his life over and over -- as much as I want! -- and study it to the depth of detail so that I can learn what he knewm, try to do the things he did, try to master the skills he demonstrated, with the great and grand and glorious purpose of making me more of what God wants me to be.
If we all did that, then we as a church collectively will be more of what God wants us to be!
I think of all the Old Testament Saints, Nehemiah is one of the best examples to help us, and yet one of the least appreciated, least studied and least preached. He’s often referred to mostly has a joke: "Who’s the shortest man in the Bible? Knee-hi-miah!" But nothing could be further from the truth! He was a giant of the faith once delivered to the Saints, and when we examine the major qualities of his character -- love for his fellow man, prayer, faith, courage, and an inspiration to others to do that which is right and Godly -- he can become what he ought to be, what he is: one of the greatest heroes in the all the Bible, especially to anyone who says they love God. Nehemiah’s life and book can help us love God better, and eventually be more Christ-like.
