HISTORY IS STORY OF UNFORSEEN
In the introduction to his A History of Europe, H.A.L. Fisher writes:
"Men wiser and more learned than I have discovered in history a plot, a rhythm, a predetermined pattern. But these harmonies are concealed from me. I can see only one emergency following another, as wave follows upon wave--there can be no generalization. There is only one safe rule for the historian--that he should recognize in the development of human destiny the play of the contingent and the unforeseen."

THE VACUUM SALESMAN
A vacuum salesman down in rural Tennessee. He had a his vacuum cleaner and all of this tools and everything, and he went out there and he told a lady, "Iíve got the most exciting vacuum cleaner you have ever seen. It will clean your house from top to bottom...you only have to pay so much down."
And the lady said, "It sounds real good."
He said, "You see that big pile of dirt right there on the floor with all those fur balls and bugs and things." He said, "My vacuum cleaner will just pick up all those things up just like that and if they donít, Iíll eat it."
She said, "Well, you might as well get your knife and fork, because we do not have any electricity out here!"
Power is the one thing nations, politicians and businessman
covet. But the power that we need is not an earthly
power. God has promised believers Spiritual power.
Vance Havner once rightly said,"We are not going to move this world by criticism of it nor conformity to it, but by combustion within it of lives ignited by the Spirit of God."
(From a sermon by Donnie De Loney, Pentecostal Power, 5/22/2012)
"The greater the power, the more dangerous the abuse."
"Power depends on good connections. The train with the locomotive, machinery with the engine; the electrical mechanism with the powerhouse. And in the Christian...
"Power will intoxicate the best hearts, as wine the strongest heads. No man is wise enough, nor good enough, to be trusted with unlimited power."
Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Power doesn't corrupt people. People corrupt power.
POWER AND "KING OF THE HILL"
When I was a kid, we used to play a game called "King of the Hill." Everyone would get together and choose some place to be the "hill." Sometimes we were lucky enough to have a dirt mound to play on, but not very often. It might be a bed or a sofa, unless, of course, our parents got wise to what we were doing. It could be porch or some other elevated surface. Anyway, the higher the hill, the better.
And once we had the place, whatever it happened to be, someone would position himself on it, and he would be King of the Hill. The rest of us, of course, would do our best to push him or pull on him until we could get him off the hill. Then one of us would take his place...only to have the others try to take our place. As you can imagine, no one rem...
"A fondness for power is implanted, in most men, and it is natural to abuse it, when acquired."
Human nature will never part with power. Look for an example of a voluntary relinquishment of power from one end of the globe to another you will find none.
