“Just before the Passover feast” (v1) is an interesting phrase that John placed strategically in this passage. Before we can have any true “Passover” experience there must be the transplanting of the human heart – not the fist-sized organ in our bodies pumping blood through our veins but the deeper side of us that pumps purpose, values and beliefs; it is that part of us that knows it needs to face the real me to becoming a better me against the knowledge that my purpose is to glorify God in the whole of my living.
I am a skeptic about everything, including God and athiesm. I am not certain about issues of cosmology. Sometimes I believe that our universe is the result of random forces. Other times I believe that there must be some purpose or ordering force, though I do not begin to understand what or who it could be. I do not expect that these cosmic doubts will ever be resolved in my mind. I am more certain that the miraculous stories that form the basis of most religious beliefs are myths. Yet I respect the Bible and enjoy reading and teaching it. Indeed, I find it even more fascinating as a human creation than as a divine revalation. I consider myself a committed Jew, but I do not believe that being a Jew requires belief in the supernatural. When I attend synagogue, as I often do, or conduct Sabbath, Passover, or Hanukkah services at home, I recite prayers. I am comfortable with these apparent contradictions. I am part of a long tradition that links to my heritage through the words and melodies of prayer. Indeed, it is while praying that I experience my greatest doubts about God, and it is while looking at the stars that I make the leap of faith. But it is not faith in the empirical truths of religious stories or in the authority of hierarchical religious organizations. If there is a governing force, he (or she or it) is certainly not in touch with those who purport to be speaking on his behalf.

THE REALITY OF PALM SUNDAY
Pope Benedict himself in his homily last Sunday in St Peter’s Square said this about Palm Sunday:
"But what are we really doing when we join this procession as part of the throng which went up with Jesus to Jerusalem and hailed him as King of Israel?
Is this anything more than a ritual, a quaint custom?
Does it have anything to do with the reality of our life and our world?
To answer this, we must first be clear about what Jesus himself wished to do and actually did.
After Peter’s confession of faith in Caesarea Philippi, in the northernmost part of the Holy Land, Jesus set out as a pilgrim towards Jerusalem for the feast of Passover.
He was journeying towards the Temple in the Holy City, towards that place which for Israel ensured (in a particular way) God’s closeness to his people.
He was making his way towards the common feast of Passover, the memorial of Israel’s liberation from Egypt and the sign of its hope of definitive liberation.
He knew that what awaited him was a new Passover and that he himself would take the place of the sacrificial lambs by offering himself on the cross.
He knew that in the mysterious gifts of bread and wine he would give himself for ever to his own, and that he would open to them the door to a new path of liberation, to fellowship with the living God.
He was making his way to the heights of the Cross, to the moment of self-giving love.
The ultimate goal of his pilgrimage was the heights of God himself; to those heights he wanted to lift every human being."
Jesus was the Host at that last Passover observance with His disciples on that evening that would come to be called Maundy Thursday. Traditionally at all Passover observances the Host, the Father in a family setting, is asked four questions by the youngest child at the Table. If you ever get to see the movie IN REMEMBRANCE, a film that depicts the transition of Passover into Holy Communion, Phillip, as the youngest disciple, is the one who asks the four questions of Jesus.
In English, these four questions translate something like this:
Why is this night different from all other nights? On
other nights we may eat leavened or unleavened
bread, but on this night we eat only unleavened
bread. On other nights we eat all types of herbs,
but tonight only bitter herbs. On other nights we do
not dip once. On this night we dip twice. On other
nights we eat sitting or reclining but on this night

Therefore, today I paraphrase those four questions in the title of today’s message so it becomes, “Why Is this Sacrament Different?” I would answer that question by three words: praise, power, and rededication.
