W.A. Criswell tells of an ambitious young man who told his pastor he’d promised God a tithe of his income. They prayed for God to bless his career. At that time he was making $40.00 per week and tithing $4.00. In a few years his income increased and he was tithing $500.00 per week. He called on the pastor to see if he could be released from his tithing promise, it was too costly now. The pastor replied, "I don’t see how you can be released from your promise, but we can ask God to reduce your income to $40.00 a week, then you’d have no problem tithing $4.00."
Sir John Templeton Chairman of Templeton Funds that manages over 15,000,000,000 (15 Billion) annually in investments said: "I have watched 100,000 families over my years of investment counseling. I always saw greater prosperity and happiness among those families who tithed than among those who didn't."
Bumper sticker - Tithe if you love Jesus, any idiot can honk!
From Rodney Fry’s Sermon: Stewardship
The late Larry Burkett, a financial expert said, “If every Church member in America would increase their giving to an average of 10% (current estimates are that American Christians give less than 3%), there would be an extra $69 billion for overseas missions and an additional $150 billion in income for American c...
THE SPIRIT OF POVERTY
If:
You justify your lack and make excuses.
You are afraid to give under the direction of the Holy Spirit.
You govern your finances with a lack of trust and don't believe God is your source.
Your are suspicious that those around you may take your money.
When things are being handed out for free you grab as much as possible, even if you do not need the things at all.
Your weekly bill at the video store / computer games is more than you give in a month to your church.
You think tithing means putting change ( 10c) in the basket in church.
You get jealous when others are blessed with money or physical things.
You think receiving is better than giving.
You cannot believe that God really wants to bless you - You say God only blesses rich people, but not you.
If you answered "yes" to any of the items above, you are bound by the spirit of poverty.
In this case they are not only withholding their tithe – they are withholding their INVESTMENT in themselves and God’s people. They are choosing to remain a “fruitless, wild vine” or a “lone-wolf Christian”. Undisciplined and re-writing the Bible to fit their situation – they go from place to place spreading the disease of WITHHOLDING from God and His people through a viable, personal, and REAL relationship with either one! They have learned to “shy away” from intimacy with God and others.
I often think to myself when I meet this person, “I wonder what their family life is like?” This attitude has to be permeating their family as well! Maybe this is how their family operates – everyone lives in a sort of dysfunction moving through the cycle of resentment, hurt feelings, passive behavior or aggressive behavior – obsessive thoughts and compulsive reactions such as anger or the withholding of love and attention.
Billy Graham stated, “One of the greatest sins in America today is the fact that we are robbing God of that which rightfully belongs to Him. When we don’t tithe, we shirk a just debt. Actually we are not giving when we give God one-tenth, for it belongs to Him already (Lev. 27:30). This is a debt we owe. Not until we have given a tenth do we actually begin making an offering to the Lord! (From sermon: Partners with God)
b. Larry Burkett states, “A verse in Proverbs says that God has asked for our first fruits: the first and best of all that we receive. That means that we should tithe from our total gross income before taxes. Any profit made from the sale of a home ought to be tithed upon, because it is, in fact, part of the first fruits. Other parts of our first fruits would be inheritances, insurance monies, dividends, and interest. These are all parts of our increase. A farmer first sets aside a portion from the harvest for seed to plant the following year. If he didn’t, he would have another crop. As Christians, our tithes are like seeds. Clearly, if we give to ...
Quote by John D. Rockefeller, SR. “I have tithed every dollar God has entrusted to me. And I want to say, if I had not tithed the first dollar I made I would not have tithed the first million dollars I made.” (From Encyclopedia of 7,000 Illustrations).
BILLY GRAHAM: CAN MONEY BUY HAPPINESS?
Rev. Billy Graham: "The Bible warns that money cannot buy happiness. Money cannot buy true pleasure. Money cannot buy peace of heart. And money cannot buy entrance into the Kingdom of God. If God has given you more than your neighbors around about you, dedicate your possessions to Christ, and realize that you are only a steward of what God has given you--and some day you will have to give an account of every penny you have spent. The Internal Revenue Service wants to know how you spend your m...
