Why do I give?
The first thing that popped into my head was that I don’t want to be a free loader. I know that it costs money to run a church. On average it takes 40 square foot of building space per person that attends church. Multiply that times $100.00 to $150.00 a foot to build and it doesn’t take me long to figure out that someone had to pay $16,000.00 to $20,000.00 just to provide a place for my family to worship today. The church pays commercial rates for utilities and high interest on our building loans. Literature costs money, landscaping costs money, salaries cost money--everything costs money. I’m just not the kind of person that wants to get something for nothing. I want to pay my way.
Did you know there’s a company called “The Alibi Agency.” This London based agency’s slogan is: “We serve those who stray.” Here’s what’s on their web site: “With the pressures of modern life many of us have occasion to stray from our long term partners & dally with a brief sexual relationship with a third party, this is often a short term affair, inconsequential to our long term plans & relationships, but with modern communications, and media, it has become increasingly difficult to be able to carry on such a temporary dalliance, without risk of detection.. The Alibi Agency was established to provide a way out of this situation, we offer a Service which can help to protect your loved ones from undue anxiety, & help ensure the stability of a long term relationship by offering secure and professional handling of "Alibi’s" for you.. For instance:- we can provide you with invitations to corporate events, to cover your absence, we will provide telephone answering so that if someone tries to contact you, our receptionists will handle the call in the manner which was pre-arranged with you, as maybe a hotel receptionist, or a golf club secretary, she will offer to call your room, or have you paged, giving recognition to the fact that you are actually resident in the facility..” It goes on but you get the...
Two warships with the largest full-load displacement in the world are the US Navy aircraft carriers. The USS Nimitz and Dwight D. Eisenhower weigh about 91,400 tons. They are 1,092 feet in length overall and have a speed well in excess of 30 knots with their nuclear-powered 280,000 horse power reactors. Their complement is 6,100 men and women. The total cost of the Eisenhower commissioned on October 18, 1977 exceeded $2 billion excluding the more than 90 plus aircraft carried. As immense as these two ships are they are both turned by one man at the helm controlling a rudder 1/1000th the size of the ship. A tiny rudder controls the course of these great ships.
2002: a busy year for those who help in times of disaster
With barely two weeks left in the year, only six of the 50 states have
not needed what the American Red Cross calls a large-scale disaster
response, a new report says. The agency says, however, that 93 percent
of its responses are to house fires. The top five Red Cross responses
for 2002, based on severity of damage and size of area affected, with
the cost (in millions) of providing shelter, meals, crisis counseling,
medical attention, financial help, and other services to needy families:
Hurricane Lili/tropical storm Isidore (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama)
$15.8 million
Texas floods/tornadoes 13.5
Western wildfires (Arizona, Colorado, California, Oregon) 8.1 Veterans Day tornadoes (Ala-bama, Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee,
Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania) 3.7
Typhoon Chataan (Guam) 5.4

Friday, I did a quick web based search, and I was surprised by what I found. I answered four questions:
1. Do you and your spouse have any children under the age of 18 from this marriage?
2. Can you locate your spouse, and is he or she willing to sign the divorce documents with you?
3. Have you and your spouse agreed on obtaining a divorce?
4. Is this an uncontested divorce?
And then I was told that I qualified for an “online divorce”! Cost $299.00
In fact, if I want to do it myself, there is a kit for $39.95!
I heard an interesting news item this week. According to the US Government it will now cost $160,140 for the average middle class American family to raise a child to the age 18. If you are quick on the draw with your math facts you just estimated what it may cost you to raise your children. For Susie and I, if the estimates are correct, it will cost us around $800,000 to raise our 5 kids, and that doesn't include college! We could be over one million dollars if you were to add college costs for our five kids.
When you stop to think about it, the cost of raising our kids is still a real bargain. $160,140 over eighteen years works out to only about $8,897 per year, or just $741 per month. Now that is only $24.37 per day or about $1 per hour. That's a deal!
Some might argue that investing our money in something other than children would give us a better return on our money. With the right investment strategy parents could skip having the kids and just get rich. Before we jump to any conclusions, just what can you get for your investment of $160,140 per child these days? For only about $1 per hour you will receive the following:
Baby's first steps, and their first words, "Mama, Dada!" To play tickle monster, and blow raspberries on tummies.
Small hands to hold and bear hugs that hold on tight.
A lifetime supply of butterfly kisses (a.k.a. perma-kisses!).
The chance to be the tooth fairy.
The opportunity to always believe in S...
In a recent survey by the Assoc. of Life Underwriters of Washington, D.C., it was shown that for every dollar reaching the needy, the sick, the underprivileged child, and the aged adult, the cost of channeling it through the church is just eight cents, while the cost of channeling it through voluntary charitable organizations or the federal government is 27 cents and $3, respectively.
Rev. Thomas R. Petty, quoted in His, May, 1976
The Center for Creative Leadership in San Diego reports that companies whose leadership was rated high in ethics, employee motivation, employee development and communication enjoy 20% higher profits. Employee replacement costs range from $5,700 to $50,000 per person, not counting the immeasurable cost of know-ledge loss.
