Deistic Teens- Researchers with the National Study of Youth and Religion have concluded American teens believe in a combination of works based righteousness, religion as psychological well-being, and a distant, non-interfering god. With no place for sin, judgment, salvation, or Christ; their creed is a far cry from Christianity. The study found they believe: • A god exists who created the world and watches over human life. • God wants people to be nice to each other. • The central goal of life is to be happy and feel good about oneself. • God does not need to be involved in one’s life except when needed to resolve a problem.• Good people go to heaven when they die. 1No Religious Affiliation: 1 out of every 9 Americans do not belong to any organized religion. Among young people its 17% compared with only 7% of people over 65. William J. Murray, a D.C. based religious activist, reports, young people “identify with angels, say they believe in a superior being, but will not attach themselves to a specific denomination or creed.” (The Pastor’s Weekly Briefing 11/25/99)
