Church Attendance Surge Over: For the last three decades, Gallup Poll has found the percentage of Americans who attend church or synagogue weekly to hover between 39% and 43%. In May ‘01, the figure was 41%, in the 10 days after 9/11, it climbed to 47%—a noticeable rise, but no more than what is usual during the Christmas or Easter seasons. By early November, attendance had dropped back to 42%. George Barna, Barna Research Group, found a larger rise in church attendance than the Gallup Poll did, as well as a slight increase in Sunday school attendance. But Mr. Barna found no change in the number of people who said they had prayed to God, read the Bible, participated in a small prayer group, volunteered at church or made time for personal prayer or meditation. Even the number of those who said religious faith was very important in their lives stayed the same. He said. “I think it confirms that for the most part we take faith for granted, and we turn to religion in times of crisis. But after the immediate crisis passes, so does our flirtation with any kind of deeper faith.” Bookstores have been reporting many requests for Bibles and books on Islam. But over all, the sales figures for religious books after 9/11 “are really mixed,” said Bill Anderson, President of CBA. (NY Times 11/26/01)

Muslim Majority: Near the end of this century Europe is likely to become part of the Western Arab world, according a leading scholar of Islam and the Near East. Prof. Bernhard Lewis views migration and demographics as major contributors to this development. Lewis points to several factors, such as the strong and growing presence of Turks in Germany, Arabs in France and Pakistanis in the UK. Native Europeans tended to marry late and have few children while immigrants from these countries marry at an early age and have many children. He predicts that the European population will have Muslim majorities by the end of the 21st century. (Assist News Service 8/3/04)

Every Major Religion except Islam is declining in Western Europe, reports Gordon-Conwell’s Center for the Study on Global Christianity. The drop is most evident in France, Sweden and the Netherlands, where church attendance is less than 10% in some areas. The forces driving the decline include Europe’s turbulent history, an increasing separation between the church and government and perhaps most of all, the continent’s unprecedented affluence. Islam is one of the world’s fastest growing religions. It is estimated that there are 2 billion followers of Islam, (Muslims) worldwide and that there are close to 6 million converts in the U.S. I’ve listed for you some of the main differences between Islam and Christianity. (1) Christians believe God’s will is revealed in the Bible, while Muslim’s believe it’s revealed through the Qu’ran. The Islamic Holy book was said to be given through one person - the prophet Mohammad. One of the reasons God, in His wisdom, used different people to write the Bible was to give it credibility. When a number of people given similar testimony it lends reliability to a document, but when you must depend on one person who says he’s the only one that God spoke to, without anyone else’s verification, it can be very suspicious. (2) Muslim’s are forbidden to try to persuade people to become a part of the Islamic faith. Christians on the other hand are commissioned by God to help others learn of God’s love and to become a part of the Christian family. This commission can be dangerous. Do you remember Dayna Curry & Heather Mercer, who were imprisoned in Afghanistan? Why were they jailed? For trying to convince others of the love of Jesus. (3 )Muslim’s believe they receive salvation by rigidly doing good works for Allah (God) where Christians believe that they c...

Global Religion: According to Idea News service, the fastest growing religion in the world is Islam, followed by Hinduism. Christianity is the 3rd fastest growing religion, with a 1.3% annual growth rate. The report also found that over 26% of the world’s population has not heard the Christian gospel, despite the fact that nearly 5 billion Bibles are distributed annually throughout the world. Dialog Encouraged: The NAE has adopted guidelines for churches for urging evangelicals, who have not made a priority of interfaith dialogue, to interact more with Muslims. But the guidelines promote a fundamentally different approach to interfaith relations than that used by mainline Protestant groups. The evangelicals emphasize that Christians should use dialogue sessions with Muslims to “give testimony to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, because it is our duty to do so.” The guidelines also urge Christians to use dialogue to spell out the differences between Christianity and Islam, and to call Muslims to account for the lack of religious freedom in Muslim countries.
