A GIFT
BEYOND DESCRIPTION by Melvin Newland; 2 Corinthians 9:15-15
My text
this morning is 2 Corinthians 9:15. It is a short verse, only 8
words
long. Listen as the apostle Paul says, "Thanks be unto God for His
indescribable
gift."
This is
the time of year when we are concerned about choosing just the right Christmas
gifts to give to the special people in our
lives.
But let me ask you, "Have you ever received an indescribable gift?"
Have you ever received a gift....

THE
CONQUERING CHRIST OF CHRISTMAS by James Davis; Isaiah 9:6-7
Will
Christ be the center of your celebration this Christmas season? Are you living
for the things that Christ died for? The
Christian
needs to remember that our joy is because of Jesus, our songs because of our
Savior, our love because of our Lord, our
inheritance
is because of His incarnation, and our blessings a result of His birth.

THE
SAD, SAD, PART ABOUT CHRISTMAS by Steve Malone; Matthew 2:1-12
In 3
days it will be Christmas day. All over the world people are fighting the
crowds at malls, wrapping presents, putting bikes
and
swing sets together, sitting on Santa's lap, decorating Christmas trees,
putting lights on their homes, cooking big dinners,
going
to Christmas parties, singing Jingle Bells and frosty the snowman. People
everywhere, from ages 1 to 92 are excited, and they
are....

BECOMING
A PERSON GOD CAN TRUST by Todd Hudnall; Matthew 1:18-25
When
you own something of great value you want to make sure it is kept in
trustworthy hands. You want your money to be with a bank
you can
trust. If you own stock, you want the stock to be in a trustworthy company. As
any owners of Enron stock recently learned;
It's
risky to be the stockholder in a company whose leadership you can't trust. What
if you are God and you want to redeem the....

A
SHEPHERD'S STORY by Joel Smith; Luke 2:1-20
Good
morning. I guess I should begin by introducing myself. My name is Matthias and
I'm a shepherd by trade. I used to scratch out
a
living tending sheep in the land of Palestine. I'm here to tell you about the
night that my understanding of God and his
purposes,
and my place in them, changed forever.
I've
got to level with you. This is not the most comfortable thing for a man
such....

THE
SHEPHERD WHO DID NOT GO
I came
across a story about a shepherd who lived 2000 years ago.
The
story is about shepherd who was a youth on that first Christmas night.
And now
he is old and as his grandson sits on his knee he recalls that
night,
"A long, long time ago, when I was a little more than a boy, I was
out on
the Judean hills one night with some other shepherds, keeping watch
over
the flock. And an angel of the Lord came upon us and the glory of the
Lord
shone roundabout us. And we were very afraid. But the angel said, "fear
not...
for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is
Christ
the Lord... you shall find the baby in swaddling clothes, lying in a
manger."
When he
had said this the old man's lips quivered and ceased to move and
there
was silence. Then the grandson turns and looks with wide, puzzled eyes
into his
grandfathers face and says, " But, grandfather is that all? What
did you
do when you heard the good news? Was what the angel said really
true?
Was the Christ child ever really born?"
The old shepherd sadly shakes his
white head and answers, " I never knew. I
never
went to see. Some say that it is all a myth. Others say they found in
Him,
the light of God and the power for life. But for me I could never be
quite
sure. Because I never did go to see."

WHAT
CHILDREN HEAR
I was reading the story of Jesus' birth to
my day-care children one
morning.
As usual, I stopped to see if they understood.
"What do we call the three wise
men?" I asked.
"The three maggots," replied a
bright 5-year-old.
"What gift did the Magi bring baby
Jesus?" I corrected.
"Gold, Frankensteins and smurfs!"
the same 5-year-old replied.

JESUS
VS. SANTA
Santa
lives at the North Pole ... JESUS is everywhere.
Santa
rides in a sleigh ... JESUS rides on the wind and walks on the water.
Santa
comes but once a year ... JESUS is an ever present help.
Santa
fills your stockings with goodies ... JESUS supplies all your needs.
Santa
comes down your chimney uninvited ... JESUS stands at your door and
knocks,
and then enters your heart when invited.
You
have to wait in line to see Santa ... JESUS is as close as the mention
of His
name.
Santa
lets you sit on his lap ... JESUS lets you rest in His arms.
Santa
doesn't know your name, all he can say is "Hi little boy or girl,
what's
your name?" ... JESUS knew our
name before we did. Not only does He
know
our name, He knows our address too. He knows our history and future and
He even
knows how many hairs are on our heads.
Santa
has a belly like a bowl full of jelly ... JESUS has a heart full of
love.
All Santa
can offer is HO HO HO ... JESUS offers health, help and hope.
Santa
says "You better not cry" ... JESUS says "Cast all your cares on
me
for I
care for you."
Santa's
little helpers make toys ... JESUS makes new life, mends wounded
hearts,
repairs broken homes and builds mansions.
Santa
may make you chuckle but ... JESUS gives you joy that is your
strength.
While
Santa puts gifts under your tree ... JESUS became our gift and died on
a tree.
It's
obvious there is really no comparison. We need to remember WHO
Christmas
is all about. We need to put Christ back in CHRISTmas, Jesus is
still
the reason for the season. Yes, Jesus is better, he is even better
than
Santa Claus.

THE
REAL NEWS
Take
the year 1809. The international scene was tumultuous. Napoleon was
sweeping
through Austria; blood was flowing freely. Nobody then cared about
babies.
But the world was overlooking some terribly significant births.
For example, William Gladstone was
born that year. He was destined to
become
one of England's finest statesman. That same year, Alfred Tennyson
was
born to an obscure minister and his wife. The child would one day
greatly
affect the literary world in a marked manner. On the American
continent,
Oliver Wendell Holmes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts. And
not far
away in Boston, Edgar Allan Poe began his eventful, albeit tragic,
life.
It was also in that same year that a physician named Darwin and his
wife
named their child Charles Robert. And that same year produced the cries
of a
newborn infant in a rugged log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky. The
baby's
name? Abraham Lincoln.
If there had been news broadcasts at
that time, I'm certain these words
would
have been heard: "The destiny of the world is being shaped on an
Austrian
battlefield today." But history was actually being shaped in the
cradles
of England and America. Similarly, everyone thought taxation was the
big
news--when Jesus was born. But a young Jewish woman cradled the biggest
news of
all: the birth of the Saviour.
