Under Fire
“I
invite you to sit down in front of your television set
…
I can assure you that you will observe a vast wasteland."
"Newton Minnow
spoke those famous words when he was the chairman of
the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) — four
decades ago! Imagine his thoughts on today's
television offerings. There's the violence, sex,
foul language — and that's just the commercials!
Yet television
is the Mars Hill of our day. It's where people go not
necessarily to exchange ideas, but to have ideas pumped
into their minds. Ideas that rarely, if ever, include
articulate Christian viewpoints on network television.
… Until now.
Starting
Saturday, October 2, Lee Strobel,
the former teaching pastor at Willow Creek and Saddleback,
hosts a weekly national program called Faith
Under Fire on PAX-TV. It airs at
10 p.m. ET and PT, 9 p.m. CT and MT."
(Bob Gordon)
Be sure to tell your congregation about
this program!

The Scandal of Grace
by
Brian Bill
Matthew 20:1-20:16
In this series, we've been learning
about the topic of grace. As we look at how Jesus dealt with people
and at some of His parables, we're discovering that these “Grace Encounters”
radically changed people's lives 2,000 years ago and can change
ours

Matthew 20:1-20:16
This is not a well-liked story because
it hits at our sense for what is fair and just. Our first impression
is that it is not fair. Why? Why does Jesus tell this parable?
This is very similar to some places in China today. The jobless will

Matthew 20:1-20:16
Every morning they line up on the streets
– dozens of people outside the temporary services agencies in Chicago.
They're lined up at 6:00 am each morning looking for a job, but these
agencies won't find jobs for them. They'll only find them work to

Matthew 20:1-20:16
There was a newspaper story some years
back of a man who sold his asphalt company for $422 million. That
was not the reason for the story, but it became a story worthy of
newspaper attention when he gave $128 million to his workers.

THE
NEW WORK SCHEDULE
A union shop steward
is addressing a union meeting...
"Comrades. We have agreed on a new deal with the management.
We will no longer work four days a week."
"Hooray!", goes the crowd.
"We will finish work at 4 PM, not 5 PM."
"Hooray!", goes the crowd, again.
"We will start work at 10 AM, not 9 AM."
"Hooray!"
"We have a 150% pay rise."
"Hooray!"
"We will only work on Wednesdays."
Silence...then a voice from the back asks,
"Every Wednesday?"

MISSED OPPORTUNITY
Thomas Edison said “Opportunity is
missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks
like work.”

NO
ONE EXPECTED ME
I
dreamed death came the other night
And heaven's gate swung wide.
With kindly grace an angel fair
Ushered me inside.
And there, to my astonishment
Stood folks I'd known on earth.
Some I'd judged and labeled as
“Unfit”, “Of little worth”.
Indignant words rose to my lips,
But never were set free
For every face showed stunned surprise
No one expected me!

WHAT
IT COSTS
Philip
Yancy defines grace as “a gift that costs everything for the giver
and nothing for the recipient.”

THE
REAL DEAL
Reaching
the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked a young
accountant who was fresh out of school, "What starting salary
were you thinking about?" The Accountant said, "In the
neighborhood of 100,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."
The interviewer said, "Well, what would you say to a package
of 5 weeks vacation, full medical and dental, Company Retirement
Fund to 50% of salary, Executive Share Option Scheme, Profit Related
Pay and a company car leased every 2 years - say, a 5 series BMW?"
The Accountant sat up straight and said, "Wow! Are you kidding?"
The interviewer replied, "Yes,
but you started it."
