Listen to Your People
“Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said…”
Matthew 9:4
I don't know if Jesus could read minds or if he just knew people so well that he knew what they were thinking. Either way, he responded to people's thoughts, beliefs, and questions.
Some preachers are afraid to let the audience influence their message for fear they'll loose control, become unscriptural, or look like the audience is setting the agenda for the sermon.
But, according to the book Inductive Preaching “The Gospel accounts record some 125 incidents of Jesus communicating with others. And about 54% of those encounters were initiated by his hearers. It's interesting that the Son of God, who came to earth to convey the most important message of all time, who had the clearest channel to God and the deepest understanding of the message let the audience determine his communication agenda more than half the time” (Gregg and Peter Lewis, p.72)
We should take our lead from Jesus. It's the wise, biblical, and loving thing to get imput for your sermon before you preach. Feedback after the sermon is too late. What questions are your people asking? Do you know what they are thinking? What do they need you to preach about?

HOW COME HE DOESN'T DO IT?
There was once a pastor who had a little five-year-old daughter. Now the little girl noticed that every time her dad stood behind the pulpit, and was getting ready to preach, he would bow his head for moment before he began to preach. The little girl noticed that he did this every time.
So one day after the service the little girl went to her dad and asked him, “Why do you bow your head right before you preach your sermon?”
“Well Honey” the preacher answered, “I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon.”
The little girl looked up at her father and asked, “Then how come he doesn't do it?”

WHAT PRAYER CAN DO
The great preacher and pastor of Chicago's famous Moody Church, A.C. Dixon declared, "When we rely upon organization, we get what organization can do; when we rely upon education, we get what education can do; when we rely upon eloquence, we get what eloquence can do, and so on. Nor am I disposed to undervalue any of these things in their proper place, but when we rely upon prayer, we get what God can do."

TRANSFORMED BY PRAYER
The video "Transformations" made in 1999 shows stunning Revivals that are taking place mostly in third world countries (Africa, South America, etc) - Revivals that have literally TRANSFORMED ENTIRE TOWNS AND CITIES for Jesus.
It showed how in one Columbian city (notorious as a drug citadel), the church leaders who were hopelessly divided only became unified after a well-known pastor was murdered. Suddenly, through this unity God was able to move. They decided to hold a huge all-night prayer gathering in the city stadium and 50,000 Christians came. Within nine months of this united prayer the drug lords who had dominated that city were dethroned and everything had changed. Since then the Christian community has experienced massive growth and has become a 'beacon set on a hill' in that place. They continue to hold massive unified prayer gatherings in the city stadium.
In another dark South American town the desperation point again came when a pastor had a gun jammed against his head. This sparked intensive unified PRAYER and the situation turned around until now about 90% of the people in that town are Christians! God has even blessed the ground so that the soil produces huge crops - carrots as thick as your arm! The whole place is covered with God's abundance, as His glory is able to be displayed through His unified, praying people.

HAVE YOU PRAYED ABOUT IT?
I heard Howard Hendricks tell about a time early in his teaching ministry when he worked up a humdinger of a series on prayer. At the end of his study he knew more about prayer than he had ever imagined he could know. He had worked it into a grand presentation and couldn't wait to preach it. As he walked to the podium to give the first lesson, it dawned on him that he hadn't prayed about the lesson or the series.
