Great PR: Companies are becoming more creative in how they support philanthropy. More are offering employees paid time off for volunteer work. Such policies make for excellent public relations. In today’s still-tight labor market, companies are also betting that work-life benefits such as volunteer programs will help them recruit and retain the best people. The move to encourage volunteerism reaches beyond large companies with nearly 40% of businesses with annual revenues of $10 million or less having policies promoting philanthropy; like granting paid, unpaid, and even extended leave for volunteer work. The number of businesses setting up formal volunteer programs is growing 25% a year. (Business Week Online 12/22/00)
