Messiah In Isaiah 49 Series

Summary: We need to understand Jesus and his mission as much as we can. Isaiah 49 presents, in prophetic verse, three truths about our Savior.
Messiah In Isaiah 49
1. Exciting day with Boris Goldin, Chosen People Ministries.
2. Some people enjoy Jewish Roots because they like the culture, heritage, or aura of ancient Judaism or Messianic Judaism.
3. I am interested primarily because I love the Word of God, both testaments.
4. New believer, 1974, Lamb album, Mr. Ayers/synagogue, expository preaching.
5. My entire ministry, OT and NT, 50% each.
6. In 1993, pastor friend called to ask me about feasts… 1995… Sam…internet resources, books, etc.
7. But the heart of my interest is still the Bible, including texts like today’s.
8. Review: The Servant of the Lord in Isaiah can refer to Cyrus, Israel, the Messiah, or the Messiah and Israel together.
9. In our text, the Messiah is called Israel and is the called the one who rescues Israel; the harmonization comes from understanding the Bible uses the King of a nation interchangeably with the nation over which he rules.
Main Idea: We need to understand Jesus and his mission as much as we can. Isaiah 49 presents, in prophetic verse, three truths about our Savior.
I. The Messiah Is Israel’s KING (3, 5-6)
A. Symbolism for nation: King and KINGDOM interchangeable (3)
1. (e.g., Daniel 2:36 and following where King Nebuchadnezzar and his kingdom are both symbolized as the “head of gold”; the antichrist and his empire are both called “the beast” in Rev. 13, etc.)
2. Messiah is sometimes called David, means he descended from David
3. “And I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd.” (Ezekiel 34:23)
4. “Israel” can mean, “he is a prince with God”
5. Thus the Messiah is an individual who is the ultimate descendent of David, the ultimate descendent of Israel, call in Isaiah 9:6 the Prince of Peace
B. This Servant brings ISRAEL back to God (5-6a)
Like Jesus, we are all called to bring people back. Peacemaking, reconciliation, leading people to repent…[Gal. 6:1, restoration] We all fail in differing ways…
We talked about how Barnabas rescued John Mark from the stigma of desserter
C. But this is not ALL he does
II. The Messiah Would Live A UNIQUE Life (1-2, 4,7)
This message is to be shared to the “coastlands” where Jewish people were exiled
A. Named before BIRTH (1) (see Matthew 1:21)
B. Was an AMAZING teacher (2)
John 7:45-46, The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
Revelation 1:16, “In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength…”
The Word of God is a sword and an arrow (piercing)
1. Sadly, many Christians gravitate toward celebrity leaders and teachers, we need to learn from the Master himself who has given us a wealth of unknown but often competent teachers of the Word.
2. Hidden for a time (Galatians 4:4); when he began teaching “Is not this the carpenter’s son?....”
3. In a sense, Palm Sunday was when he came out of the closet…
4. The prophecy of Daniel 9:25-26, to the day, takes us to Palm Sunday
C. He seemed to FAIL in restoring Israel (4) but will be EXALTED (7)
Was his work in vain? He felt rejected and a failure. John the Baptist doubted.
Romans 11:25, “Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.”
1. Is it a sin to be discouraged? [How long must I be with you?; wept over Jerusalem]
2. Is it a sin to feel like a failure or be disappointed?
3. We all wonder if our lives and efforts amount to anything. So many things seem to fail. Marriages, Kids, careers, dreams for life, influence…
4. If Jesus could wonder, why can’t we? But we need to resolve like he did
5. We need to give people space… not encourage them to deny their struggles.
III. The Messiah Will IMPACT the World (5-6, 8-12)
A. The end times: He will establish ISRAEL (5-6a)
Acts 1:6-8, So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
