Revelation Chapter 4

A Throne of Mercy

In the book of Revelation the word throne is used 47 times. In the rest of the New Testament it is only used 14 times.

Introduction: John is ushered into the throne room right before the greatest tribulation the world has ever seen. In the middle of the room John sees …

Point #1 - The Person who sits on the Throne

Rev 4:2-3 And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne. (3) And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and [there was] a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.

1. A Ruler “behold, a throne was set in heaven, and [one] sat on the throne.”

A. It is a Sovereign Throne
Psa 47:8 God reigneth over the heathen: God sitteth upon the throne of his holiness.

It is not the United States Congress that has supreme power. There is not a government on earth that matches the Sovereign throne of Heaven.

He who sits on the throne is over every government,
Over every king,
Over every nation,
His name is The most High God!

B. It is a Set Throne – “and, behold, a throne was set in heaven”

Psa 45:6 Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom [is] a right sceptre.

His throne cannot be moved by the winds of politics, shaken by the deeds of men, or tainted with corruption, It is set.

Governments will rise and fall, kings will come and go, It is set.

Man can shake his fist at God, hate His church, and deny His existence, It is set.

His throne is set on high!

C. It is a Singular Throne - “and [one] sat on the throne.”

1. One who is Holy
Isa 54:5 For thy Maker [is] thine husband; the LORD of hosts [is] his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

2. One who is Worthy
Deu 6:4-5 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God [is] one LORD: (5) And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

2. A Representation - (3) And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone:

The Jasper is a clear transparent stone.
The Sardis is a blood-red precious stone like a ruby.

What does this represent?

To answer that you have to go back to Exodus 28 when orders are given about the garments of the High Priest.

Exo 28:15-21 And thou shalt make the breastplate of judgment with cunning work; after the work of the ephod thou shalt make it; . . . (17) And thou shalt set in it settings of stones, [even] four rows of stones: [the first] row [shall be] a sardius, a topaz, and a carbuncle: [this shall be] the first row. . . (20) And the fourth row a beryl, and an onyx, and a jasper: they shall be set in gold in their inclosings. (21) And the stones shall be with the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, [like] the engravings of a signet; every one with his name shall they be according to the twelve tribes.

The very first stone was a sardius and the last stone was a jasper. The sardius had the name of the first born Reuben engraved on it. The jasper had the name of the last born Benjamin on it. Between these stones was the names of every tribe in Israel.

The sardius speaks of Sacrifice and Blood, It points
