Text: Luke 24:13-19 (King James Version)
"And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. (v. 14) And they talked together of all these things which had happened. (v. 15) And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus Himself drew near, and went with them. (v. 16) But their eyes were holden that they should not know Him. (v. 17) And He said unto them, ’What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?’ (v. 18) And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto Him, ’Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?’ (v. 19) And He said unto them, ’What things?’ And they said unto Him, concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a Prophet mighty in Deed and Word before God and all the people:"
Topic: Because He Lives!
If we believe the Biblical account of the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ, then we know that He lives; and, "Because He Lives" life is worth the living; and, we absolutely can face tomorrow! The great gospel singer/songwriter team of William J. Gaither (b. 1936) and Gloria Gaither (b. 1942), in their song entitled "Because He Lives," get it right:
***"God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus;
***He came to love, heal, and forgive;
***He lived and died to buy my pardon,
***An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.
***How sweet to hold a new-born baby,
***And feel the pride and joy He gives;
***But greater still the calm assurance,
***This Child can face uncertain days because He lives.
***And then one day I’ll cross the river;
***I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;
***And then as death gives way to victory,
***I’ll see the lights of Glory and I’ll know He reigns."
***"Because He lives, I can face tomorrow;
***Because He lives, all fear is gone;
***Because I know He holds the future,
***And life is worth the living just because He lives."
Each and every year, we come to the Easter season declaring the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ! We do this because all of the hope of Christianity depends upon this great Truth! So, the Truth is that Jesus, the Christ, lives! What does that mean to you and to me? I assume, of course, that you are here, this morning, because you believe the validity of the Holy Bible - the written Word of Almighty God - account of the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ! By His Resurrection, Jesus, the Christ, has proven that He is victorious over the worst thing that Satan can do! It is through this victory that we are able to face tomorrow with its uncertainties and potential problems!
Mankind - both male and female - has a need for hope! Let’s look at the scene in our Holy Scripture text for today, shall we? We find two men walking sorrowfully along the road to Emmaus - men who were followers of Jesus, the Christ - their dreams had been shattered - their hope was gone; and, they were filled with questions without any answers! The other Disciples were in hiding - gathered behind locked doors for fear of the Jewish leaders! The two men appeared to be in a hopeless situation!
