“BEHIND ENEMY LINES” - A Biblical Response to Same Sex Marriage

Introduction:
“Behind Enemy Lines” is a war movie about a naval pilot who is making a normal reconnaissance mission during the Bosnia conflict in December 1995. During the routine mission he takes a photograph of mass graves exposing the Serbs secret mission of ethnic cleansing. He is recognized by the enemy and his plane is shot down. He cannot return fire because he is under orders to just observe. As a result his co-pilot is killed and he barely escapes. Ultimately, after a horrific challenge, he escapes and produces the evidence which reveals the enemy’s attempt to change their culture by destroying the opposition.

TODAY, WE FACE A VERY SIMILAR BATTLE IN OUR NATION; A WAR AGAINST THE BIBLICAL MODEL OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY. We have been told by the opposition that we are not to engage in the conflict…we are merely to observe. However, in the life of every true follower of Christ there must be a sense of personal, biblical and moral accountability to act when we see an opponent dedicated to destroying a God-directed biblical pattern for marriage. A failure to engage rejects everything we know about TRUTH from the spoken word. Make no mistake, the family unit is under attack; the definition of biblical marriage is under attack. As a result there must be a biblical response; a response that deals only in defense of biblical truth and not in the personal attacks of others who would disagree with a biblical position.

TWO WEEKS AGO AFTER BOTH VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND SECRETARY OF EDUCATION ARNE DUNCAN PUSHED FOR ACCEPTANCE OF SAME-SEX MARRIAGE; the same weekend, North Carolina became the 31st state to amend its constitution to define marriage as “an act between one man and one woman” by a vote of 62% to 38%
Less than a week later, President Obama became the first American president to affirm his support of same-sex marriage. In an interview with Robin Roberts of ABC the President stated:
“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors, when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, but are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married. I, you know, we are both practicing Christians and obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others but, you know, when we think about our faith, the thing at root that we think about is, not only Christ sacrificing himself on our behalf, but it’s also the Golden Rule, you know, treat others the way you would want to be treated.”
President Obama’s statements should come as no surprise. He has refusal to defend the “Defense of Marriage Act” and now his comments about "evolving" on this issue have brought us to this moment. I didn’t expect him to come out publicly until after he secured a second term. His announcement has merely accelerated the timeline of an inevitable conversation.
So, what is the biblical response to this difficult issue facing Americans? How should we as Followers of Christ respond in a culture
