BEHOLD THE LAMB John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. I - The SUBSTITUTIONARY LAMB "lamb" - Lambs were commonly used for sin offerings in the O.T. - Two lambs were killed EVERY DAY at 9 A.M. & 3 P.M. - Every year a lamb was slain for the Passover - The lamb was the substitute for Israel's sins. - Jesus, the Lamb of God, was our substitute. - He died in OUR PLACE! - Isa. 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. II - The SUPERNATURAL LAMB "of God" -All the lambs that were offered in the Bible - were chosen by men. -Jesus was chosen, appointed, approved, and accepted by GOD Philippians 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. III - The SACRIFICIAL LAMB "which taketh away the sin" -Through his sacrifice He takes away The POLLUTION of SIN The POWER of SIN. The PENALTY of SIN. -Rev. 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, 9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; IV - The SUFFICIENT LAMB "of the world" -The O.T. sacrifices were at times just for a person, maybe a family, and once a year for a nation. -Jesus, the LAMB of GOD, was offered as a SACRIFICE for the ENTIRE WORLD! -And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. (1 John 2:2) V - The SAVING LAMB "Behold" -It is OUR DUTY to "Behold" Him! John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
