Come Thou With Us And We Will Do Thee Good!

Summary: When inviting Hobab to journey with the children of Israel, Moses would not take "no" for a final answer. So it is that we must continue inviting the lost to come to Jesus.
COME THOU WITH US, AND WE WILL DO THEE GOOD
"And Moses said to Hobab, the son of Raguel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law: We are journeying unto the place of which the Lord said, I will give it to you: come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord has promised good things to Israel."
I. The Bible Narrative:
1. Moses told Hobab the mission of Israel: "We are journeying to the place of which the Lord said: I will give it to you…" (verse 29)
2. Moses’ plea to Hobab: "…come thou with us, and we will do thee good: for the Lord has promised good things to Israel. (verse 29)
3. Hobab’s first response to Moses: "I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my kindred." (verse 30)
4. Moses’ more intense plea: "Leave us not, I pray thee, inas- much as you know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you will be as eyes for us." (verse 31)
5. Moses’ assurance of a blessing to Hobab if he aligns with Israel
"And it shall be, if you go with us---indeed it shall be---that whatever good the Lord does for us, the same we will do for you." (verse 32)
6. Hobab reconsiders according to verse 33: "So they departed from the mountain of the Lord on a journey of three days…"
II. A Present-Day Parallel:
1. The entire human race is on a journey to eternity somewhere. The Christian is on a journey to heaven: "the place of which the Lord said: I will give it to you."
2. The redeemed are commanded to seek others to join them on the pilgrimage to heaven, saying: "Come thou with us…"
3. The church can truthfully say: "We will do thee good" because:
a. The church has the message the world needs: "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes." Romans 1:16
b. The church as the fellowship the world needs: "That which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ." I John 1:3
4. Men may at first reject the gospel invitation but we must never stop urging the lost to repent of their sins and turn to Christ Jesus.
