The Seven Churches for Today: Pergamum
Compromising Power
1. Reminder of Jesus’ Power (12)
Jesus’ sword symbolizes war & salvation (Hebrews 4:12).
2. Realities of a Sinful City (13)
a. The church stayed true to Jesus.
b. The church stood strong against persecution.
3. Rebuke of a Compromising Church (14-15)
a. The church had accepted deceptive, false teachings (2 Peter 2:15, Jude 11).
b. The church had some practicing pagans “among” them (2 Corinthians 6:14-18).
i. Sacrificed food…
ii. Sexual immorality…
iii. Sinful indulgences…
c. These practices are a “stumbling block” to God’s people.
Toleration leads to compromise
and compromise leads to corruption.
4. Rewards of a Repentant Church (16-17)
a. Jesus will purify his Church if his people will not.
i. The Bible is the sword today (Ephesians 6:17).
ii. The Holy Spirit uses God’s Word (John 16:5-16).
b. Jesus will reward his overcomers.
Compromise has power because
it takes spiritual power from the church.
