Summary: What made a shepherd boy a giant slayer and the greatest king that Israel ever had? The answer to that is what will enable us to become great as well.

Youngest: little, least, smallest, insignificant, unimportant, lothe, to feel a loathing, to detest

KEEPETH:

To Keep is to be in charge of or responsible for.

Grounds-keeper, Zoo-keeper, House-keeper, Jail-keeper,

Keep= watch over, provide for, limitations, control, bridle, restrain,

Here was David the youngest of eight sons, The least the smallest, the insignificant, the one considered unimportant, doing the most insignificant, undesired, unappreciated, job of all the brothers, (he is keeping the sheep).

Here is a tremendous Lesson, God doesn’t so much look at what we are doing as How we are doing it.

(We are all keepers, We are all responsible for something).

God is watching us: The way you keep your room, the way you take out the trash, the way you mow the lawn, the way you treat your friends, siblings, parents, The way you act when you’re away from your parents. [How much of what you say is what you mean?]. (Do you say what you know they want to hear, in order to get them to let you do what you want to do? That’s called lying.

When it was time to promote David, They knew exactly where he was and what he was doing = faithfulness, dependability, commitment,

Notice how God’s perspective and mans perspective are reversed: What man considered to be of least importance is now the most important among them.

They hadn’t even thought of David, and now they are on their feet waiting for his entrance. (Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither).

Note: Man promotes talent-abilities etc. But God promotes character

Pr 18:16 A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.

Your gift may bring you before great men, but it is character that enables you to stay there.

Josephs gift brought him before pharaoh, but it was his character that made him prime minister of Egypt.

God said to Samuel: I have provided me a king among the sons of Jessie.

Provided =: - behold consider, spy , perceive, regard, enjoy foreseeth

1a4) to look at, see, regard, look after, learn about, observe, watch, look upon,

Basically God says: I have been watching Jessies sons, and I’ve been observing them and learning the way the think and the way they act, and who they are when no one is watching, and I have selected one of them to represent me.

Greatness is not a one time event: We see David slay the giant and we think that was when he became great, but greatness is not doing one great thing in a big way, But in doing every little thing in a great way.

True greatness is not seen in the big things we do, but in the little things we do in a great way.

“Great people do consistently what others only do occasionally”

A crown doesn’t make a man a king, it only identifies the king in the man.

Vs 12 Arise and anoint him: for this is he.

Vs 13 The spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.

Now we see the secret of David’s Power

#1 He was a person of character

Personality is what we say about ourselves, and what we allow others to see, Character is who we are when nobody is looking.

#2 He was anointed with the Holy Spirit.

God is looking for some Young David’s and Joshua’s to anoint with his Holy Spirit

Will you be one of them? David was the youngest of eight, He was #8 = the number of new beginnings. God is wanting to do something fresh and something new,

#3 David respected the covenant.

1sam 17: for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?

It was this Young David, keeper of the sheep, Anointed with the Holy Ghost who slew the lion and the bear, who became sauls armor bearer, who played skillfully upon the harp and drove evil spirits away from saul, Who stood alone against the philistine champion and slew him with a sling and a stone, and cut off his head with his own sword, and delivered the nation out of the hand of the enemy.

But David is dead and gone, all that is left of David is the record of his life and in the record of his life we see the secret of his power.

Character begins with a decision to make the choices in life that honor God,

Does your attitude honor God? Do your thoughts honor God? Do the things you are watching and listening to honor God? Does your relationship with your boyfriend-girlfriend honor God?

Character is our part, The anointing is Gods part.

Let’s be like David and give God something to anoint.

God used many of the thoughts that I gleaned from your message to touch the hearts of 400+ students who attend our school in Nicaragua. Thanks for sharing this with us Terry. You had some powerful points in your message!

This sermon encourages moral correctness and virtues, which is a message Christians need to know, esp. as it is easy to abandon truth. One essential part is missing--and that is Jesus. David was a sinner who was absolved of shameful transgressions that warranted death at the worst and impeachment at the least. It was David, bowing to the Lord and confessing his sin that made him great; faith which trusts the Lord will be a heart of repentance--daily repentance--and a heart that is renewed by God's Holy Spirit. Let us not justify ourselves by what we do but let God justify us so that we can do what needs to be done.

Wow what a sermon. In the world of moral decay youth can learn to be stable and faithful before the Almighty God. For the Lord does not look at the handsomeness of a person but looks at the heart. Therefore promotion comes from the Lord not from East nor west,
