Summary: The first question in the Bible was a question from the Devil.

Did God really say…

TEXT Genesis 3:1-3:9

Today I want us to look at the first two questions of the Bible. When we find the answers to these two questions, we will find the answers to most of the questions of life.

Questions are a important way of learning.

An older lady gets pulled over for speeding...Older Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?

Officer: Ma’am, you were speeding.

Older Woman: Oh, I see. Officer: Can I see your license please?

Older Woman: I’d give it to you but I don’t have one. Officer: Don’t have one?

Older Woman: Lost it, 4 years ago for drunk driving. Officer: I see...Can I see your vehicle registration papers please. Older Woman: I can’t do that.

Officer: Why not?

Older Woman: I stole this car. Officer: Stole it?

Older Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner. Officer: You what?

Older Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up. Within minutes 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma’am, could you step out of your vehicle please! The woman steps out of her vehicle. Older woman: Is there a problem sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner. Older Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma’am? Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.

The officer is quite stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a purse and hands it to the officer.

The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma’am, one of my officers told me you didn’t have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Older Woman: Bet the liar told you I was speeding, too.

Questions are a way to be deceived.

The first question of the Bible was this kind of question.

Gen. 3:1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat

7 And the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.

8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

We find the first question is a question of trickery.

1. “Did God really say…”

I. DID GOD REALLY SAY…

The devil is a master of trickery.

Notice the sly, smooth, nonaggressive way that he moves into a place.

He does not attack Eve because Adam would have protected her.

He simply asks a question of Eve.

EVE WAS NOT THERE WHEN THE TREE WAS TALKED ABOUT.

2: 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die

The Devil starts wit a question that he knew she did not know the answer.

She had heard about the tree so she told the devil what she THOUGHT was the WORD OF GOD.
