Text: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (King James Version)
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (v. 2) A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; (v. 3) A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; (v. 4) A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; (v. 5) A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; (v. 6) A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; (v. 7) A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; (v. 8) A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."
Topic: Equal But Unequal!
Each and every one of us gets an equal amount of time for every day that we live; however, how we spend that time is not equal - some of us spend it for doing good; while, others of us spend it for doing evil! How do you spend your time; and, do you know what time it is? Every day of our lives, Almighty God, Someone who loves us very much, deposits into our bank of time 86,400 seconds of time - time which represents 1,440 minutes - which, of course, equals 24 hours each and every day! Almighty God gives each and every one of us the same time to use each day - nothing is ever carried over on credit to the next day! There is no such thing as a 26-hour day; although, some of us would like it if there was! From today’s dawn until tomorrow’s dawn, there is a precisely determined amount of time for each and every one of us! Someone once said, "Life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you want to; but, you can spend it only once!"
Time is a fascinating; yet, frustrating subject! It is amazing because whether or not we are penniless - whether we happen to be the richest person on earth - whether we are young - whether we are old - whether we are single - whether we are married - whether we have children - whether we are childless - whether we are employed - whether we are unemployed - whether we are in school - whether we are unschooled - whether we are homeless - or, whether we are the President of the United States - we each have exactly the same amount of time each day! Just think, if you will, how "time" is woven into the very fabric of our conversation - each and every day! A sample list of familiar lines follows:
***"What time does the meeting start?"
***"I don’t have time!"
***"How much time will it take?"
***"Don’t waste your time on that!"
***"It’s time to go!"
***"Time out!"
***"It’s time we had a long talk!"
***"What time is supper?"
***"Take out a clean sheet of paper. It’s time for a pop quiz!"
What about this thing called "time?" What is it? Although we talk about it each and every day - although we check the time throughout the day - although King Solomon in his journal of life - in Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, verses 1-8, records his notes on life exclusively to time - it is an elusive, slippery subject! Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, defines time as: "the measured or measurable period during which an action, process, or condition exists or continues."
