"Facing the Goliath in our Lives" - I Samuel 17
So Many Christians Never Achieve The Maximum Potential In Their Lives Because They Never Conquer The Thing That They Fear The Most. - Jonathan Falwell
a. The Israelites feared the Philistine Giant because he seemed to be Invincible.
I Sam.17:11- When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.
I Sam.17:24- And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.
b. They believed their future depended solely on their own Abilities.
c. They did not trust God for their Deliverance.
2. Finding the Solution to Our Unsolvable Problems
Saul looked within his own ranks for their deliverance from the giant instead of within himself.
I Sam.10:23- And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.
Saul was presented with an answer that he knew would not work.
I Sam. 17:33- And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
d. God provided the answer in the most Unlikely candidate.
3. Preparing for the Battle Before Us
David was given armour, spears, swords, and helmets.
Saul believed that this was the only way to prevail.
a. David prepared the way God told him to:
I Sam. 17:39- And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
I Sam. 17:40- And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherdís bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
He removed the Armour.
He gathered the Stones.
He looked to the Lord.
David went to battle with Confidence because he went to battle with God as the source of his strength.
b. Why Goliath Lost the Battle:
Because he trusted in Himself.
Because he thought he was Unbeatable.
Because he was On the wrong side.
Goliath LOST to the Lord
4. Why David Won the Battle
Because he trusted in God.
Because he knew he was Beatable.
Because he was On Godís side.
David WON with the Lord
I Sam. 17:46- This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
5. How Do We Win the Battles in our Lives
Prepare ourselves for the battle
Gather the Stones.
Grasp hold to the Vision.
Go at the enemy Head On.
Gain the Victory.
When we put our faith in God, he will allow us to win.
However, only if we fight the battles HE has for us to fight.
Eph. 6:12- For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
God did not simply give the victory to the Israelites, he required them to win the victory. He expects the same from us.
