Summary: These are thoughts on Genesis Chapter Twenty-Nine. In his work, "What does every Bible chapter say..." John Hunt gives an overview of each chapter of the Bible. It is my intention to do the same thing here.

GENESIS CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE OVERVIEW

Overall what is happening in this chapter is that Jacob goes to Laban’s house and marries Rachel and Leah.

Thomas Coke (1801) – Genesis 29

Jacob is kindly received by Laban. He loves Rachel, and serves seven years for her. Laban substitutes Leah, the eldest sister, in Rachel's stead, but afterwards gives Rachel in marriage to Jacob, for whom also he serves seven years. Leah bears Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah.

Joseph Benson’s Commentary (1857) – Genesis 29

In this chapter we have an account of God’s providences concerning Jacob, pursuant to the promise made him in the foregoing chapter.

(1) How he was brought in safety to his journey’s end, and directed to his relations there, who bid him welcome, (Genesis 29:1-14).

(2) How he was comfortably disposed of in marriage, (Genesis 29:15-30).

(3) How his family was built up in the birth of four sons, (Genesis 29:31-35).

Matthew Henry (1714) – Genesis 29

This chapter gives us an account of God's providences concerning Jacob, pursuant to the promises made to him in the foregoing chapter.

I. How he was brought in safety to his journey's end, and directed to his relations there, who bade him welcome (Genesis 29:1-14).

II. How he was comfortably disposed of in marriage (Genesis 15-30).

III. How his family was built up in the birth of four sons (Genesis 29:31-35).

The affairs of princes and mighty nations that were then in being are not recorded in the book of God, but are left to be buried in oblivion; while these small domestic concerns of holy Jacob are particularly recorded with their minute circumstances, that they may be in everlasting remembrance. For “the memory of the just is blessed.”
