Summary: God Rides upon the Storm

Psalm 29:1-11 God Rides upon the Storm

William Cowper:

God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea, And rides upon the storm.

I. The Call to Worship (1-2)

2 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name;

i. The Expectation - “give unto the LORD.”

ii. The Expression - the glory due unto his name

iii. The Exposition - 2 worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

II. The Call to Wonder (3-9) - He stood amazed at:

i. God's Presence - 3 The voice of the LORD is upon the waters:

the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.

ii. God's Preeminence - 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful;

the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

iii. God's Power - 5 The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yea, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.

2 Thes 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.

God's Perception 7 The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire

Heb.4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

God's Persuasion - 8 The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests.

God's Purity - 9 and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.

III. The Call to Witness (10-11) He testified of:

i. His Position - 10 The LORD sitteth upon the flood;

ii. His Protection - yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever.

iii. His Provision - 11 The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.

Psalm 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
