FOCAL POINT: THE KEY TO ABUNDANT HARVEST

INTRODUCTION:

HOSEA, CONSIDERED THE FIRST OF THE MINOR PROPHETS, PROPHESIED TO THE JEWS IN THE NORTHERN KINGDOM OF ISRAEL, PRIMARILY. HE PROPHESIED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EIGHTH CENTURY B.C. THE LORD LOVED HIS COVENANT PEOPLE; HOWEVER, IDOLATRY HAD PERMEATED HIS PEOPLE. HE WARNED THEM TO REPENT, FORSAKE IDOLATRY, AND COME BACK INTO COVENANT. GOD USED HOSEA’S FAMILY AS A STRIKING PARALLEL TO WHAT THE NATION OF ISRAEL (BOTH THE NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN KINGDOMS) WOULD BECOME WITHOUT REPENTANCE. THE PROPHECY CAME TO FRUITION IN 733 B.C. WHEN THE ASSYRIANS INVADED THE NORTHERN KINGDOM AND DISMEMBERED IT.

READ HOSEA 10:12.

ISRAEL BROUGHT FORTH FRUIT BUT IT DID NOT PLEASE GOD. THE FRUIT WAS FILLED WITH CORRUPTION AND EVIL THEIR LAND WAS SATURATED IN IDOL WORSHIP. THE PROPHET JEREMIAH ADDRESSED THE SAM E ISSUE IN JUDAH (SOUTHERN KINGDOM). READ JEREMIAH 4: 1-2

HOSEA’S CALL FOR REPENTANCE IS A RECURRING THEME IN THE BIBLE. THE CALL WAS URGENT AND NOT TO BE IGNORED. NATIONAL JUDGMENT CAME TO ISRAEL FOR REFUSING THE WARNING OF HOSEA. THIS WELL KNOWN THEME IS EXPRESSED IN 2 CORINTHIANS 6:2 AND JOHN THE BAPTIST’S CALL FOR REPENTANCE IN MATTHEW 3:1-12.

GOD’S BLESSING COULD BE THEIRS BUT NOT WITHOUT REPENTANCE. PLOWING, PLANTING AND WATER IS NECESSARY FOR A CROP. WHEN THE RAIN DOES COME THE GROUND WILL PRODUCE A CROP. REPENTANCE FROM SIN PRODUCES THE SAME EFFECT. IT SETS THE STAGE FOR A BLESSING FROM GOD. A PLOW OF CONVICTION IS KEY TO A GOOD CROP. A PLOW OF CONVICTION MUST FIRST BREAK UP A HARD HEART BEFORE THE SEED OF THE WORD CAN BE PLANTED AND PRODUCE FRUIT!

ISRAEL WOULD NOT REPENT. GOD’S JUDGMENT FELL UPON THEM AND THEY VANISHED INTO HISTORY. SPEAKING TO ISRAEL IN HOSEA 8:7 “FOR THEY SOW THE WIND AND THE REAP THE WHIRLWIND. THE GRAIN HAS NO HEADS; IT YIELDS NO GRAIN, SHOULD IT YIELD, STRANGERS WOULD SWALLOW IT UP.”

APPLICATION: THE KEY TO AN ABUNDANT HARVEST STARTS WITH A REPENTANT HEART! THE FERTILE GROUND IS THEN READY FOR A FUTURE HARVEST.
