Summary: We Grow in our ability to worship God by worshiping in the midst of tragedy, through music, and by doing good to others!

How to Grow in Worshiping God

1. We Practice Worshiping Well When _Tragedy_ Strikes (Job 1:20-21).

A. Job had _terrible_ tragedy impact his life (Job 1:1-19).

B. Job responded with grateful _submission_ (Job. 1:20-21).

C. The text closes with Job saying “blessed be the name of the Lord.” Surely this prayer of adoration, blessing, and reverence shows Job was a well-practiced _worshiper_.

2. We Practice Worshiping Well Through _Music_ (Col. 3:16).

Question: Is order or chaos preferable?

• Order is better than chaos 1 Cor. 14:40 says “But all things should be done decently and in order.” The context for this verse is one where Paul discusses the role that spiritual gifts, such as tongues, play in a public worship gathering. The context is one of a corporate (group) gathering of that local body of believers (church).

• Preparing does not mean it is less spiritual (David prepared in 2 Samuel 6 and 7)

Question: What style of worship music is preferable?

Ephesians 5:19: 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Col. 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

Musical worship should:

1. Teach and Admonish sound Biblical Truths

2. Come from an Attitude of Thankfulness

3. Be exercised with an attitude of mutual submission.

4. Include Actual Biblical Words and Terms (Psalms),

5. Can include a variety, not just one style (Hymns, spiritual songs).

Someone said: “We neither love nor hate something simply because it is new; neither do we cling to that which is established simply because it is old. No, wisdom foregos such hasty wanderings and nestles itself fully in the breast of the man who evaluates all by the Word of God, by the needs of his fellow man, and lastly, his own needs as well.”

3. We practice Worship Well Through _Doing Good_, and through _sharing_ (Heb.

13:14-16).

A. Doing Good to others is a pleasing _sacrifice_. Hebrews 13:“14 For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. 15 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

B. Sharing with others is a pleasing _sacrifice_. (Heb. 13:16). Those who possess wealth are supposed to be generous and to share. 1 Timothy 6:17 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. 18 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19 thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.”

C. 1 Timothy does not link generosity or sharing to worship, but Hebrews 13:6 does. This helps us understand that worshiping God is something that we do throughout the week as we walk in obedience, not just on Sundays. This shows us the living for God as living sacrifices is critical to our worship lives (Romans 12:1-2).

Conclusion: How do we grow in worshiping God? We grow in worshiping God by practicing the discipline of worshiping Him in ways he approves of.
