Proverbs 10:1-11
Introduction:
Since it’s Fathers Day, I want to share with you the definition of a father than I found. “A father is someone that is forced to endure childbirth without an anesthetic.”
Men and women are different, but in the interest of bringing men and women together, I want to provide some insight into what men mean by certain phrases:
o When a man says “IT WOULD TAKE TOO LONG TO EXPLAIN”
He means: "I have no idea how it works"
o When a man says "TAKE A BREAK, HONEY. YOU ARE WORKING TOO HARD’’
He means: "I can’t hear the game over the vacuum cleaner"
o When a man says ’THAT’S INTERESTING DEAR.’
He means: "Are you still talking?"
o When a man says: "IT’S A GUY THING"
He means: "There is no rational thought pattern connected with this, and you have no chance at all of making it logical"
o When a man says "CAN I HELP WITH DINNER"
He means: "Why isn’t it ready yet?"
o When a man says "UH HUH, SURE HONEY,” or “YES, DEAR"
He means: Absolutely nothing – It’s a conditioned response.
o When a man says "YOU KNOW HOW BAD MY MEMORY IS."
He means: " I can remember the theme song to ‘Gilligan’s Island’, the stats for Dodgers baseball & the vehicle identification numbers of every car I ever owned – but yes, I forgot your birthday"
o When a man says "YOU LOOK TERRIFIC!"
He means: "Oh please don’t try on one more outfit, we’re late and I’m starving."
o When a man says "I’M NOT LOST. I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE WE ARE.’’
He means: "No one will ever see us alive again."
o When a man says, “THAT’S NOT WHAT I MEANT.”
He means: “If something I said can be interpreted two ways, and one of the ways makes you sad or angry, I meant the other one.
Billy Graham said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, un-praised, and unnoticed, yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” Fathers today don’t get the recognition that they deserve. I realize that not every father is worthy of kudos, and I realize that we are living in a time when many fathers are absent, but God intended for fathers to be a leader of the home that provides a stabilizing force for the family.
Women and men are different, vastly different, but our society has attempted to emasculate men. Men may not do what women do, but what men do for the family is important. Let me give you an example, fathers are more likely to foster independence in their children. Mothers tend to want to keep their children as babies. Neither of those is wrong. Both are essential to the recipe of promoting healthy children. No one is trying to devalue the role of mothers.
Solomon wrote Proverbs. He begins it by saying that before he was a father, he was the son of King David. As we consider Proverbs 10 this morning, there are some important lessons that Dads give us better than anyone else.
