Summary: Revelation is given. It doesn't take self-effort or getting ourselves into a certain state of mind. It's what I like to call a Divine Download from The Holy Spirit.

Recently while I was doing Bible study I hit what I felt like was a snag. Everything had been going well till that point, it was a smooth flow of revelation. But then I read a setting portion of scripture expecting immediate understanding and....Nothing. So I read it again. And again. And again. I was determined not to glaze past it because I knew The Holy Spirit was showing me something. In my growing frustration I turned to Greek and Hebrew definitions of what I was looking for I even looked up a Delitzsch commentary on the subject for more understanding but still...Nothing. It was at that dead end that The Holy Spirit reminded me to lean not on my own understanding because it's Him that teaches us and gives us understanding.

Some times we'll reach what we think is a snag as we read the Bible and it can be oh so tempting to pull up what we already know on the subject, or look up what other people are saying on the subject but revelation is very personal it's fellowship with The Spirit of God and it's Him that will guide us to listen to or read material from other people if He so chooses. Revelation is not about what I want to know it's what The Lord is saying to me and what He wants me to say to other people. He more than anyone knows what we and others need. Our part is to humble ourselves before Him and receive from Him for effectiveness. Recently I adopted a phrase I heard and it might come off a little dramatic to some but it works for me. Everytime I open The Bible I say "speak Lord, Your servant is listening," to remind myself its not about me, the prayer is "give us our daily bread" so it's Him that gives me my daily bread, He knows what I need.

So after reaching that dead end and receiving a gentle shove from The Holy Spirit, I walked away, came back after a few minutes, opened my Bible and said "speak Lord, Your servant is listening" and then in a way that only He can do, things I hadn't noticed before started jumping up at me and I finally got an understanding. We are ever learning so we are students in The school of The Holy Spirit. The Word says, He who has ears to hear let him hear what The Spirit is saying to the churches. It's The Spirit that says through us. It's His Word, His purpose, we are only vessels by whom it comes. Anytime we feel like we've hit a snag, we need to step away, pray and ask The Lord to help refocus us, and remind ourselves we are ever learning students, but we are vessels of His message to ourselves and other people so doing it with our own understanding would make it less effective. I was skeptical about devotionals at first, I thought it was limiting but The Lord led me to get one and I'm glad I did because from it I'm given my daily bread every day.
